Windrose has launched in Early Access, and thousands upon thousands of Steam players are setting sail with great enthusiasm.

Since April 14, 2026, you can set sail as a pirate inWindrose—and you’re far from alone. In the first 24 hours of Early Access, this mix of survival and role-playing reached nearly 70,000 concurrent players and garnered over 2,000 reviews.

We’ve summarized for you how Windrose is being received, what’s being praised, and where there’s still room for improvement.

“Rum, Beer, Adventure, and Mead”

The ratings are also impressive. Out of a total of nearly2,500 Steam reviews, the game currently has88 percent are positiveout of. Let’s take a look at exactly what the community has to say.

What’s being praised:

  • The mix of building, exploration, and survival fits perfectly with the pirate theme and is well executed.
  • The cohesive graphics and atmosphere really bring out that buccaneer vibe.
  • Despite being in Early Access, there’s already a ton of content, most of which has been implemented smoothly.
  • Naval battles and ship controls are a blast.

As Steam userFlintlockLuke describes it:“Rum, beer, adventure, and mead—those are the things a pirate needs.”

Here are some reviews:

  • The Souls-like combat system isn’t for everyone, and even if you’re into it, the balancing still needs some tweaking.
  • Windrose could use some quality-of-life features, for example, regarding inventory management.
  • The UI seems too generic to some. People want more than just functionality here.

Steam usersOceanFey describes the combat system as follows: “Fighting on land is terrible—enemies barely warn you of their attacks, can’t be stunned, and even wild boars deal so much damage that it’s ridiculous.”

This criticism comes as little surprise for a title in Early Access. Elements like balancing, quality of life, and the user interface are typically areas that developers continuously refine with the help of community feedback. However, if balancing is already a concern for you: When creating a world, you can freely adjust the combat difficulty in terms of enemy damage and health.
