“We can already play it” – Most of the Bethesda team is now working on The Elder Scrolls 6

Bethesda boss Todd Howard reveals in an interview where the development of TES 6 currently stands

In April, Bethesda is due to release Starfield&nbsp&nbsp&nbspfor PS5 and with it a new DLC including a huge free update. However, the studio has its hands full with more than just the space adventure.

As Bethesda boss Todd Howard now reveals in aninterview with IGNThe Elder Scrolls 6 is now taking over a large part of the development team.

The interview is primarily about Starfield, Howard does not want to say anything about TES 6 in terms of content. Nevertheless, he gives an interesting insight into the way Bethesda works. A clever strategy is necessary to cope with the enormous amount of work involved in an AAA production.

When we start a new game, we usually start smaller. We then have a pre-production – that’s what we call it – which takes about two years, sometimes three, with a smaller team to make sure we know exactly what we’re doing before we put a lot of people on it. […]

And once we have a solid foundation, many team members and also our external partners can join the project. With The Elder Scrolls 6, we’re at the point now where the majority of the studio is working on it, a lot of our partners are involved and we know exactly what we’re doing: This is what we’re doing.

So far, however, we haven’t seen much of the new Elder Scrolls. Since 2018, we’ve had to make do with the teaser trailer:

In order to ensure that the long development process runs as smoothly as possible, a lot has also been learned from Starfield. For the new Elder Scrolls, the team is switching from Creation Engine 2, which was used for the sci-fi role-playing game, to Creation Engine 3.

This has been integrated much more flexibly into the workflows, so that processes no longer come to such a standstill because something is not working technically.

We are in a fortunate position where the builds of the game work very consistently. Well, not every single day, but we’ve had more days than ever where the build is stable, has new content andwe can play the game.

Starfield had problems with this for years, especially during the engine change. With TES 6, this now runs much more smoothly.

With regard to the story, level system or even a release date, Howard unsurprisingly keeps a low profile. When asked by IGN about the announcement of TES 6 eight years ago, he simply replied: “Just pretend we didn’t announce it. It doesn’t exist.”

But at least we now know that things are moving forward. Other games have not been so lucky.
