The next RE Engine update is intended to ease the burden on developers and speed up processes. However, AI-generated in-game content remains strictly off-limits.

Capcom has now announced that the company plans to rely more heavily on artificial intelligence in the development of its games going forward. As part of this, its RE Engine will be further improved with AI. The plans were initially met with skepticism from fans, but Capcom emphasized that it will use AI technologies not for generated content, but only for support.

REX Aims to Make Game Development More Efficient

On October 2, 2026, Capcom held its annual recruiting conference. There, programmer Satoshi Ishida presented future plans for the further development of the RE Engine. As part of the project known as REX (RE Next Engine), the existing engine is to be gradually modernized. The focus will also be on improving AI technologies. In an interview with IGN, the company explained that game development is becoming increasingly time- and resource-intensive. Artificial intelligence is intended to make the process more efficient by, among other things, testing and verifying program code, analyzing large amounts of data, and accelerating development processes, thereby reducing the workload on programmers.

The company emphasized: “We will not integrate AI-generated content into our games.”

It went on to explain: “However, we plan to actively use AI as a supporting technology to improve the efficiency and productivity of the game development process. To this end, we are currently exploring various applications in different areas, including graphics, sound, and programming.”

Capcom therefore appears to still be figuring out in which areas AI should support the development of its games. As early as March 2026, the company had addressed this topic at a shareholders’ meeting. Capcom had already stated at that time that it did not intend to use AI-generated assets in its games.

Capcom thus remains committed to its strategy of using AI solely as a support tool, while refraining from using AI-generated content in its games. With the new REX Engine, it may become clear in the future just how efficiently AI can be used in game development without relying on AI-generated content. It remains to be seen how significantly these changes will ultimately impact future games and development times.
