Nvidia plans to provide a more detailed overview of DLSS 5 in the coming days.

With theunveiling of DLSS 5in March 2026, Nvidia sparked a wave of criticism. Many gamers and developers felt the “AI filter” wasinappropriate and disrespectful.

Now, a new presentation is just around the corner, and a high-ranking Nvidia employee is offering a preview of the technology.

Nvidia Comments on DLSS 5

Edward Liu is the “Director of Applied Deep Learning Research” at Nvidia and will speak alongside other employees on July 20, 2026, during the Nvidia keynote at SIGGRAPH 2026. A few days prior, he posted a lengthypost on Xin which he discusses DLSS 5.

He writes there that DLSS 5 differs significantly from previous versions. Until now, the primary focus has been on generating “more pixels, additional frames, and cleaner lighting” using AI. Regarding DLSS 5, Liu writes:

“Generative models can produce remarkably photorealistic images. But a game needs more than just beautiful images. Every single frame must align with the world its creators have designed: the same geometry, the same characters, the same narrative intent.”

On stage, he plans to explain in more detail how the technology is intended to achieve this goal. This may also be an effort to defuse criticism of DLSS 5.

What has been criticized so far?In the first presentation of DLSS 5, several games were shown that, in some cases, looked completely different thanks to the technology. The images demonstrated immediately reminded many people of “AI slop”—that is, AI-generated images that have flooded social media in recent months.

The fear among many gamers and artists was that in the future, there would simply be an “AI filter” from Nvidia that would make games look very realistic, but also completely interchangeable. Nvidia had immediately clarified that DLSS 5 is not intended to alter the developers’ vision, but merely to bring it to life.

Nvidia may reveal new footage in the coming days—and perhaps even detailed gameplay—that better illustrates the use and benefits of DLSS 5 than heavily altered faces of popular game characters. Given current hardware prices, however, it’s still hard to imagine that the technology will reach the mainstream anytime soon.
