In the past, Uniques had fixed stats that allowed them to fulfill a specific role in a build. Great if you need exactly that function, but not very flexible. Blizzard’s change seems to be aimed at countering this. Instead of the hoped-for build freedom, however, many players see it as nothing more than an unnecessary source of frustration that is beyond their control.
Uniques are no longer unique
: What players are criticizing about the item changes
He concludes by demanding that the strength and stats should remain unique, just as the item’s name suggests.
Enchanting and Re-Rolls as Solutions
In the replies, the comment garners a lot of support, and a further post expressing a similar opinion is garnering almost as many upvotes on Reddit. Under both posts, many are calling for Blizzard to at least allow Enchanting if they’re going to throw uniqueness out the window anyway. For user NMe84, the Uniques are basically just glorified Legendariesanyway:
In addition to enchanting, rerolling stats is also a popular suggestion on Reddit and the Blizzard forums, where criticism is currently mounting. For many, the Uniques in their current state feel far too arbitrary.
If the random stats remain, many would at least like the chance to reroll them accordingly. That would give players a bit more control, rather than rendering the inherently valuable drop
useless.
User ItzOver9k notes on the Blizzard forum that, for him, it’s now all about pointless grinding. You find a suitable piece of gear, but are then punished with the wrong stats

Counterargument: RNG has always been part of the game
However, not everyone takes such a hard line. Some of the responses also point out to the angry posters, that RNG has always been and will always be a part of Diablo.
Good items are and should be rare, and perfect loot simply can’t always be planned for. As User Zeckka for example, that it used to get terribly boring when you got the same Unique for the thousandth time
. And also 1trickana is not fundamentally opposed to the new system:
It remains to be seen if and how Blizzard will adjust the unique item system in the future. Generally, players seem to welcome greater freedom and more variety. However, a large portion of the community remains critical of the changes because more grinding and less control lead to a lot of frustration. Behind Lord of Hatred lies the second major expansion for Diablo 4, which brings the story surrounding Mephisto and Lilith to a close. In addition to item adjustments, it introduces the Paladin as a new class and the Islands of Scovos as a new region. You can find a link to our review of the expansion a little further up. It has been available to play since April 28, 2026.
