A drama is currently unfolding on X over a hacked account that was apparently deleted by Microsoft. While some are calling for users to be more cautious, others are expressing shock at the company’s actions.
Streamer Joshua Khane shares his experience with Microsoft Support on X, expressing shock. According to his post, his Microsoft account was simply deleted after a hacker took it over. While this action prevented further misuse, it also meant that thousands of euros worth of games and personal photos—such as baby photos of his son—linked to the account were lost forever.
In the comments, many are stunned by Microsoft’s actions, while other users urge others to better protect their accounts to avoid such situations in the first place. Another interesting point in this context is,that a user recently sued Microsoft over exactly such a case and won—more on that below.
25 years of data and thousands of euros worth of games—all gone after a hack?
Joshua Khane’s post is definitely making waves on Xand has been viewed over 4 million times. It also garnered over 4,000 comments on the platform:
Microsoft DELETED my account AND OneDrive!! After ACKNOWLEDGING that I’m the owner of the account and that it was compromised?
25 fucking years of data, thousands of euros spent on games My son’s baby pictures? GONE!

The Dutch content creator, who has nearly 4,000 followers, appears shocked and distraught. In his X post, he shares a screenshot of the email from Microsoft Support, which reads as follows:
At Microsoft, protecting your account is our top priority. We have closely examined the purchase activity associated with your Microsoft account and, based on that, determined that unauthorized access occurred. […] To prevent further misuse, we have permanently banned your account. This action is irreversible and ensures that your data remains protected.
Microsoft justifies this drastic step by stating, that the account’s security information had already been changed. Due to internal security protocols, as well as the terms of Microsoft’s Services Agreement, they are not permitted to update or restore the security information again after it has been modified.
Shock and Anger Meet Incomprehension
It remains to be seen whether the account is truly lost or if Microsoft will take another closer look at the case following the uproar.& nbsp; Many are expressing their sympathy in the comments and sharply criticizing the company. UsersThat One Guyputs it bluntly:
Honestly, they could restore it; they just decided not to because they don’t give a damn about their users. They’ve never cared. It’s a huge company that sells your information to the highest bidder. […] I’m sorry this happened to you. It really sucks. […] People are making fun of you, but if it happened to them, they’d be the first to loudly vent their anger.
Along with a lot of sympathy, however, the streamer is also facing criticism in the comments. For example, Macroblockwrites in his reply:
Listen, I certainly don’t take pleasure in anyone else’s pain, and I don’t want to rub it in, but storing 25 years’ worth of data exclusively in the cloud—and on top of that, in one run by Microsoft—means you’re really asking for trouble. I know you know this now, but… back up your stuff. A backup means two copies. Always.
Others see it similarly and express bewilderment at how anyone could store important and personal data exclusively on OneDrive.A bitter lesson that Khane has since learned, as he clarifies in the comments. He acknowledges that his security measures were inadequate, but also emphasizes that he relied on Microsoft to keep his data and games safe for him and that, despite everything, he is the victim here.
A user sued Microsoft for exactly this reason—and won
Incidentally, a user in Brazil received the same email from customer service after his account was hacked. However, he didn’t just take it lying down and went to court. Surprisingly, he won the case,so Microsoft now not only has to restore his account, but also pay him damages.
Based on this case, Khane might want to consider taking the same step. However, there’s a catch: In Brazil, consumer protection is strong and even provides people with free lawyers to fight such cases against corporations. In Europe or the U.S., these costs are usually borne by the individual, so a lawsuit isn’t worth it for everyone. You can read more about this case and related topics in the link box.
