Digital Extremes is opening the Soulframe alpha to all players on November 6: PC only, registration via the website, dedicated launcher.

Digital Extremes is opening the Soulframe alpha to all players on Friday, November 6, 2026. The studio announced the “Open Preludes” phase on the official Soulframe website after previously introducing it in Live Devstream 18. For the first time since the closed beta began in 2023, no key or invitation is required.

Sign up on the website; launcher instead of Steam

Interested players only need an account on the Soulframe website and Digital Extremes’ in-house launcher. The game runs exclusively on PC; there are no plans to launch it via Steam, even though a page there currently displays a “Coming soon” message. Soulframe is a free-to-play title; according to the developers, the paid Founders Program will remain unchanged.

Players who join on November 6 will find 16 so-called “Preludes” chapters, which introduce the game world, characters, and mechanics. The story quests are called “Fables.” According to Creative Director Geoff Crookes, the open alpha does not yet represent the final state of the game, but rather only the “functional bones” of the future game.

Timing Just Before a Major Update

The open alpha launch is deliberately timed just before Prelude 17, the chapter “Verse of the Veilands,” which Digital Extremes says is scheduled to be released in November. Internally, the update is considered one of the game’s biggest overhauls: The Ode faction will corrupt the landscape of Midrath, players will purify regions using votives, and mounts will be introduced for the first time, including the raised Omen wolf cub as a rideable companion.

The overhaul is also a source of anxiety for the studio. “Scott and I were just talking yesterday about how nervous we are about this change,” Crookes said during a presentation for trade media. The game, which has been praised for its cozy world up to this point, will appear “significantly more unforgiving and harsh at first glance” going forward.

Lead Designer Scott McGregor attributed the restructuring of the opening to player feedback: Many players didn’t know what to do next, which is why the first few hours will be more guided in the future. Digital Extremes has not announced an exact release date for Prelude 17.
