When is Patch 12.1 coming out?
Blizzard is splitting the release into two phases, as with previous updates. Thecontent update itself launches the week of July 7, 2026. It will include the new zone and its story, the new dungeon (initially up to Heroic), the new Depths, and the housing and UI updates.
Midnight Season 2 follows a week later: Only then will the raid open, the new Mythic+ rotation begin, the new PvP season start, and the Generous Depths—along with their keys—be unlocked. The PTR is already live—but some features, such as the raid and the dungeon, will be added in later test builds.
The Story: Back to Zul’Aman
Narratively, Curse of Ula’tek picks up directly where the Zul’jan storyline left off. Off the east coast of Zul’Aman, the fog lifts to reveal a previously hidden island.
You accompany Zul’jarra, who is pursuing the Zul’jan to bring her brother and other missing people home. A long-buried history awaits on the island—along with the question of what was actually locked away there.
Meanwhile, the overarching storyline continues:With Arator, you’ll follow the trail of Xal’atath, deal with the fallout surrounding Voidspire, and encounter a resurgent Twilight’s Edge cult.
New Zone: The Coiled Isle
The new outdoor zone is calledThe Coiled Isle– a poison-ridden island with contaminated waters and correspondingly toxic enemies. Inside a mountain, a corrupted ecosystem awaits you with several new activities:
- Vaults of Atal’Utek: Areas for challenging group content with rotating public events that culminate in a boss fight.
- Curse Surges: Rare elite enemies spawn regularly at five rotating locations on the island. Defeat one to unlock Cursed Fishing at that location.
- Cursed Fishing: You’ll meet the Turtlefolk captainTokka, earn reputation with his crew, and learn to fish in the cursed waters.
- Dedicated talent tree for the zone: While you’re on the island, you’ll unlock perks—such as a reduction to the ever-present poison effect.
Lairs: World bosses reimagined
One of the most exciting new features is theLairs. Blizzard describes them as an evolution of the classic world bosses: Instead of standing around in the open, these bosses are found ininstanced encounters with scaling difficulty– up to Mythic for15 to 25 players.

The New Dungeon: Altar of Fangs
Altar of Fangs is a three-boss dungeon that will initially be playable up to Heroic difficulty at the launch of the content update. Once Season 2 begins, it will move into the Mythic+ rotation.

The Raid: The Venomous Abyss
The highlight for the raid faction comes with the start of Season 2: The Venomous Abyss brings eight new boss encounters.
The final boss is—of course—Ula’tek herself, an ancient, powerful creature of hatred, corruption, and poison, unleashed by Zul’jan’s actions. She is the namesake of the patch, and her curse permeates the entire update.

Three New Depths
There are three new additions to the Depths: The Ring of Glory, Gnarldor Isle, and the Venomfall Deeps.
With the start of Season 2, the Generous Depths will unlock. You’ll then be able to push past Level 7 and face the new Nemesis boss.
In addition, new Snake and Venom variants will appear in the existing Midnight Depths, giving the familiar depths a fresh new look.
PvP: Arenas Against Bots
After Blizzard introduced newcomers to PvP through battlegrounds against bots, the next step is here:Arenas against computer-controlled opponents.
Through the training grounds in the Group Finder tab, you can sign up for Random Arenas with up to two other players and learn the ins and outs of 2v2 and 3v3 gameplay at your own pace.
In addition, there’s a broad PvP balance update: Blizzard is reducing the severity of numerous movement slows by one tier—70 percent slows become 50 percent, 50 percent become 30 percent, and so on. The goal is to make powerful sustained snares less dominant in standard rotations.
Major Class Changes
The patch also includes a major balance update—and two systemic changes affect absolutely everyone:
- At max level, player health and enemy damage will each increase by 25 percent. Blizzard’s reasoning: Damage should be less “spiky,” and healing should feel more satisfying.
- For several specs, Blizzard is reducing the efficiency of major DPS cooldowns and, in return, increasing damage outside of burst windows. This is intended to make the phases without cooldowns feel less trivial.
In addition, there’s a small but nice quality-of-life change:
Interrupts (Kick, Pummel, Counterspell, etc.) will now display a “miss” icon and play a unique sound effect when you cast them while the target isn’t casting a spell.
Furthermore, every single class is receiving extensive PvE and, in some cases, PvP changes, as well as new set bonuses for the Venomous Abyss raid.
For those who want all the details:You can find thecomplete PTR patch notesin the Blue Post on the WoW forums. However, there’s sure to be a lot of fine-tuning done there before the release on July 7.
Housing: Blueprints and Pets Are Coming
Housing, introduced with Midnight, is getting a major expansion:
- Blueprints: You can save your interior design, switch between layouts, and share builds with others—even across regions via code (excluding China). Blueprints can be applied to the entire house, just the interior or exterior, or a single room. When importing, the game shows you which rooms, decorations, and budget are required, as well as what you might be missing. There are up to 50 save slots per player.
- Pets Move In: With the new pet bed, you can place your companions in and around the house (up to 10 inside, 5 outside). Indoor pets can be stationary or roam freely.
- Houses up to Level 12: More outdoor space, higher decoration limits—and you can now place the entryway wherever you like, even on other floors. This means there are finally real basements.
Discord Integration for Guild Life
In the future, you’ll be able to link your Battle.net and Discord accounts to chat with your guild across platforms—whether you’re in the game or not. Plan raids, find PvP partners, or just hang out: messages can be sent back and forth between the game and Discord. This feature is coming to the PTR next week.
