Despite all concerns about declining player numbers, Marathon is still being actively developed—even outside of PvP.

Marathonreceived plenty of praise from players and the press at launch, but one major concern remained: Will Sony’s massive investment pay off, or will Bungie’s latest shooter soon end up in the rapidly growing graveyard of subscription-based games because player numbers simply aren’t sustainable anymore?

Bungie itself is now sending a signal of confidence: In an extensiveblog post, lead developer Joe Ziegler explains what Season 2 will offer, what else the team has planned, and how they envision the future of Marathon as a whole.

The Immediate Future: Season 2 (Nightfall)

Season 2 of Marathon starts on June 2with a reset. Progress such as levels, equipment, and more will be reset (real-money currency, skins, and factions will remain intact).

  • Map Variant:Under the theme “Nightfall,” a night variant of Dire Marsh is coming to the game. It is the first map to feature a new time-of-day version since the release of Marathon.
  • New Shell:A new Runner shell, Sentinel (see screenshot), is being introduced. It is the first new playable class since launch. Sentinel’s focus is on defense; no further details are available yet.
  • PvE Experiments: Two experimental new game modes with a stronger PvE focus are set to provide more variety in Season 2. One features “light PvP,” while the other is pure co-op.
  • Duos:The two-player playlist is returning and offers a rotating map selection for two players.

Bungie also plans the following for Season 2: Nightfall, new weapons, gear, and the introduction of the Cradle system.

This is intended to allow for greater customization of Runner attributes in the future (beyond faction upgrades). Bungie plans to announce more details starting the week of May 25.

    Long-term plans: Seasons 3 through 5

    • Ziegler confirms that they are already working on anew map. The focus will be more on “alien elements and anomalies that test the limits of the mind.”
    • In addition, new enemieshave been confirmed. These are said to include both new enemies “from Tau Ceti” and those from outside the star system.
    • Some ongoing projects, such asmatchmaking, the user interface, and the tutorialfor new players, will be addressed. The mission system for the factions is also set to be adjusted.

In Seasons 3, 4, and 5the goal is to refine existing systems and maps, introduce additional playable classes, and expand the extraction loop with new mechanics—for example, with alternative exfil points featuring special conditions. A new endgame progression is also under consideration.

More for PvP-Avoiders:If the PvE experiments in Season 2 are successful, the developers plan to expand this area and build it out over several seasons. They are considering offering faster, more entertaining, and less frustrating alternatives to the Extraction mode.

Ziegler hints at co-op raids, pure PvP arenas, and other variants designed to suit “different friend groups, moods, and available playtime.”

Contrary to all fears of a service flop both within and outside the community, Marathon is a long-term project for Bungie. The development team is looking beyond 2026 and into 2027, according to Ziegler.

The shooter is not only set to grow in scale but also to offer greater depth and a wider range of possible gameplay experiences. Season 2 is merely the first building block toward that goal, according to the developers.

Will you be checking out Marathon again with the launch of Nightfall, and would the PvE modes be a selling point for you? Feel free to let us know in the comments!
