With FSR 3, AMD announces the counter design to Nvidia’s DLSS 3.5 at Gamescom 2023 – first games have also already been confirmed.

After AMD has focused on FSR 2 for a long time, the successor was finally presented during Gamescom 2023: With FidelityFX Super Resolution 3, the company wants to lift its AI upscaling to the next level.

AMD thus also provides a timely and direct answer to the latest announcement of the big competitor Nvidia, which already attracted attention with DLSS 3.5 at the start of Gamescom.

According to AMD’s presentation, FSR 3 is supposed to enable a massive performance boost. With the also newly presented Radeon RX 7800 XT, more than three times the number of FPS should be possible in the game Forspoken with certain settings.

The performance mode of FSR 3 is used for this, which was tested in 4K resolution and ultra-high ray tracing.

The whole AI upscaling magic is based on the counter design to Nvidia’s Frame Generation: AMD calls this process Fluid Motion Frames (FMF) within FSR 3, which are introduced in addition to the revised FidelityFX Super Resolution.

Here, frames are also intergenerated to achieve the higher number of frames per second. To reduce the resulting latency, FSR 3 relies on HYPR-RX. The core component of the tuning function is again the feature called Anti-Lag+, which works equivalent to Nvidia Reflex.

HYPR-RX is activated via the AMD Adrenalin software as the control center. Other parts of the new feature include the as yet undefined Radeon Boost as well as Radeon Super Resolution. When exactly HYPR-RX will be released is still unclear – AMD has so far spoken of a release in a few weeks, i.e. mid-September at the latest.

AMD FSR 3: RDNA 2 and newer recommended

The supported graphics cards are all models of the first RDNA generation and newer. However, at least an RX 6000 GPU is recommended; RX 7000 is of course still preferred to get the most out of FSR 3 & Co.

As an open technology, graphics cards from Nvidia and Intel should also be able to work with FSR 3.

On the other hand, we’ll have to wait a bit longer for the selection of games with FSR 3. The company primarily announced Immortals of Aveum and Forspoken as titles that will probably be the first to access the new AI upscaling version.

(Now if you notice that AMD doesn't say a word about Starfield in the listing, congratulations for your eagle eye.)

If you notice now that AMD doesn’t say a word about Starfield in the listing, congratulations for your eagle eye.

Because although Starfield seems predestined as a launch title for FSR 3 – after all, there is an exclusive partnership between Bethesda and AMD – the company couldn’t give any information about a possible FSR 3 support even when we asked.

After all, it shouldn’t take much longer until we can enjoy FSR 3 in the mentioned games, because according to AMD, the ball is now in the developer studios’ court. For example, the first patches that add support for Forspoken should be released in September.

Now it’s your turn: Is FSR 3 the right answer to Nvidia DLSS 3.5? Which games do you think should get support for the new AI upscaling as soon as possible? Under what circumstances would FSR 3 be a reason for you to switch to AMD graphics cards? Let us know in the comments!
