Epic Games has made a surprise announcement: Unreal Engine 6! The first flagship title has also been revealed. Read on to find out what you can expect from this major next-gen upgrade.
Anyone who watched theRocket LeagueParis Major over the weekend was probably expecting spectacular goals and cheering esports teams.
But what virtually no one expected:Epic Games used the stage to announce Unreal Engine 6 virtually out of the blue.
The brand-new logo, rendered in bright purple, suddenly flickered across the screens, marking the beginning of the next major technological leap. There was even a few seconds of gameplay to see—watch the trailer here:
The Leap to the Next Generation
Actually, we all thought the gaming industry had only just entered the era of the fifth generation of the Unreal Engine. Current titles continue to impress with features like Nanite and Lumen, but at the same time, UE5 games often still suffer from poor performance and other issues.
But Epic CEO Tim Sweeney had already subtly hinted in recent months that the company was working determinedly toward the “next generation of Epic.” Now we have our first indication that this transition might be picking up speed faster than expected.
The announcement came in the form of a teaser trailer that not only presented the live audience with a graphically revamped version of the classic car-pong game but also unveiled the brand-new, bright purple Unreal Engine 6 logo.
The developers made it clear that all the scenes shown were “captured real-time in game”—meaning they were taken directly from the game in real time.
When we’ll get to enjoy Unreal Engine 6 or the freshly polished Rocket League (which still runs on Unreal Engine 3) remains a mystery for now. There is no concrete release date yet. In May 2025, Tim Sweeney was still talking about a wait of two to three years.
What are you hoping for from the new technology? Feel free to let us know in the comments!
