“I was at IKEA. Does anyone really do that?”: I’ve never seen that in my entire career, but it makes sense

A simple solution to a PC problem, but one you’d only encounter in a very specific situation.

Sometimes you ask yourself:What on earth is that supposed to mean?, only to think immediately after reading the explanation:Why didn’t I think of that myself?!.

That’s what happened to me and quite a few Reddit users when we saw a recent forum post. It shows something I’ve never encountered in my entire professional career with PCs, which spans over 16 years now.

The post’s headline reads:Was at IKEA. Does anyone really use their PC like this?, paired with two photos of the setup in question:

The explanation is quite simple

Although I had already read some initial comments that raised concerns about the length of the cables, it didn’t click for me until I read the following two statements:

Case_Blue:Do you see what’s under the PC? A flat surface calledfloor. Am I missing something here?

ric2b:Yes, you’re overlooking the fact that the desk moves up and down. Either you need to find a solution so that the distance between the computer and the monitor and so on doesn’t change (like I did), or you place the computer on the desk or mount it so that the distance to the peripherals remains the same even when the desk moves.

A question of location

If the PC case is on the floor, you may run into problems with cables being too short when the desk rises. This applies, for example, to the monitor, but also to the mouse and keyboard, unless they are wireless.

I don’t have these concerns myself because I use a particularly small case that sits on my desk—specifically, the Fractal Design Node 202.

When I raise my desk, the case moves with it. So the only potential issues here are power cables that are plugged into outlets.

However, the solution with the suspended computer does have one potential problem, as userOdious-Individualpoints out:Honestly, I think the biggest problem with this is that it just looks absolutely hideous.

Feel free to let me know in the comments if you see it the same way—and if you’ve ever seen this type of PC mount in action yourself.
