AMD has released FSR Upscaling 4.1.2 via a GDK update for Xbox Series X/S developers. Official benchmark results for the Series X and S are now available, with the launch set for two weeks before GTA 6.

AMD released its machine-learning upscaling technology, FSR 4.1.2, on November 5, 2026, via an update to the Game Development Kit for developers of Xbox Series X|S. The official announcement on AMD’s GPUOpen page mentions two new models: the Full INT8 Model and the smaller Lite INT8 Model.

According to AMD, the Lite Model is half the size of the Full Model and consumes less GPU time. Microsoft’s new GDK sample allows developers to switch between both models at runtime, as AMD explains: “The upscaler memory is the same for both models because it depends on the render and target resolutions, not on the model. The choice is therefore a performance trade-off, not a memory trade-off.”

Optimized for RDNA-2 GPUs without AI units

The Xbox Series X/S GPUs are based on AMD’s RDNA-2 architecture and do not feature dedicated AI processing units. The Xbox team writes that it has worked with AMD to “optimize AMD FSR Upscaling 4 for the Xbox Series X|S and make machine learning upscaling feasible on the consoles’ RDNA-2 GPUs. These optimizations help developers balance image quality and GPU performance to deliver better visual experiences on existing hardware.”

Microsoft has published official benchmark results in a developer article: According to Microsoft, on the Xbox Series X, FSR4 Lite takes 1.29 milliseconds for 1440p output and 2.75 milliseconds for 4K, while FSR4 Full takes 1.95 milliseconds for 1440p and 3.86 milliseconds for 4K. On the Xbox Series S, FSR4 Lite takes 1.9 milliseconds for 1080p. Here, milliseconds refer to GPU frame time, not frame rate.

In the PC sector, NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.5 had recently outperformed AMD’s FSR in 4K benchmarks; the Xbox rollout brings AI upscaling to the aging console generation—which is about six years old—for the first time.

Handhelds Launch with Asus Preview Driver

Xbox handhelds are also getting FSR 4.1.2, initially apparently only with the efficient INT8 model. According to AMD, access is provided via Asus’s preview driver for the ROG Xbox Ally X and ROG Xbox Ally X20, which upscales DirectX 12 games using FSR 3.1 or newer. Support for additional models in the ROG Xbox Ally series will follow in a later update, for which no date has been specified.

Whether individual games actually utilize the new upscaling feature will be determined on a title-by-title basis; there is not yet an officially confirmed example on Xbox. The release date falls two weeks before the Xbox launch of GTA 6 on November 19, 2026, which is considered the first major test of the hardware’s capabilities. GTA 6 will not be playable on the Xbox handhelds until a PC port is available.
