Modern Warfare 4 won’t be a multiplayer revolution, but it will further outpace the competition in the shooter genre—precisely where CoD already excels

When it comes to gunplay, very few games can hold a candle to Call of Duty. Modern Warfare 4 will extend that lead even further in 2026.

In many ways, MW4 is a continuation of what Infinity Ward delivered in 2019 and 2022 with the reboots of Modern Warfare and MW2, before Sledgehammer and Treyarch took the reins in the following years. And gunplay is clearly the main focus.

The New Gunplay

According to the developers, weapon handling in MW4 is intended to feel as realistic and intuitive “as in previous games in the series.” To achieve this, a series of subtle but ultimately noticeable changes have been made:

  • Weapon Framing:For the first time, weapons are now adjusted to the actual field of view from the first-person perspective, so that the models appear perspectively correct. This gives animations such as reloading a significantly more authentic look.

  • Image Distortion:Thanks to new camera distortion (Lens Distortion) combined with slight depth of field, the overall image in MW4 looks more believable and is slightly reminiscent of bodycam shooters like Unrecord, Better Than Dead, or Bodycam.

  • Enhanced FOV:To maximize the benefits of a wider field of view, a fisheye effect is added; this preserves the wider viewing angle for players at the edge of the screen, while enemies retain their pixel size, ensuring no FOV disadvantage.

  • VFX Masking:Muzzle flashes and smoke when firing look realistic, but were criticized as distracting in previous games. Thanks to new filtering technology, MW4 will display intense muzzle effects that still do not obscure the target or weapon sights.

  • Depth of Field:A new graphics technique realistically adjusts the depth of field when aiming down sights (ADS). Instead of obscuring the target, only the rear sight of open sights is blurred—ensuring a clear and realistic sight picture.

  • Weapon Compression:MW4 simulates the physical impact of the level environment on the weapon’s position. For example, if a player approaches a wall or peeks around a corner, the position of their rifle is automatically adjusted realistically.

  • Weapon Spread:When firing from the hip, random spread (bloom) is no longer calculated. Instead, recoil is physically transferred to the weapon. The barrel and mounted lasers therefore always point exactly where the bullet will hit.

    What does all this mean?

The bottom line is that the changes in MW4 result in a realistic look, but not necessarily realistic gameplay. In terms of weapon behavior, animations, and graphics, the shooter leans heavily toward modern tactical or hardcore shooters like Ready or Not or Bodycam. At the same time, however, the gameplay remains fast-paced and on the arcade level of the previous MW games. This is primarily due to the movement.

    A Dash of Mirror’s Edge

Modern Warfare 4 doesn’t take its foot off the gas when it comes to movement. Instead, Infinity Ward expands the movement repertoire with a few new features, such as climbing along ledges, sliding while climbing, and sliding into a prone position.

The animations are linked together in such a way that jerky transitions and friction points are largely eliminated, according to the studio.

Infinity Ward demonstrates this using a specially created obstacle course, in which the character climbs, slides, and jumps around like a nimble monkey in pursuit of a new best time.

It does indeed look a touch smoother than in previous CoD installments and is almost reminiscent of the systems in parkour games like Mirror’s Edge.

Thanks to the smooth transitions, it feels less hectic than in recent years and therefore more believable. It’s still fast, though. It’s CoD, after all.

    Editor’s Conclusion

As someone with a pronounced obsession for weapon handling in video games, MW4 is, for me personally, a fantastic step that consistently continues down the path Modern Warfare 2019 had set out on.

The individual changes may not sound like much, but taken together, they elevate the feel of the guns to a whole new level. And in the future, shooters will once again have to measure up to what Call of Duty delivers in terms of gunplay.

Nevertheless, the same will hold true in 2026: CoD remains CoD. The multiplayer doesn’t reinvent the wheel by any means, and those who haven’t been able to get into the traditional arena battles so far certainly won’t be convinced by MW4 either.

    Editor’s Verdict

Modern Warfare 4 isn’t taking any major risks when it comes to multiplayer. Instead of experimenting, it optimizes and refines what MW19 and MW2 established. At the same time, Infinity Ward is deliberately de-escalating some points of contention within the community: Yes, the minimap shows enemies as red dots. No, you no longer have to “charge up” perks at the start of the round. So 2026 won’t be the year CoD suddenly breaks new ground.

Still, I’m glad to see some technical and technical improvements (which are probably possible now that we’re finally leaving the PS4 behind). The animations and gunplay are a whole lot more believable than they were in the MW reboot. And let’s be honest, they were already really good back then! Other new features, like the modular “Kill Block” map, feel more like a gimmick—pretty nice, but certainly not a game-changer for the genre.

Yes, MW4 certainly feels conservative, but after two years of Black Ops in a row, I’m still looking forward to a more down-to-earth military setting and that crisp feel for the weapons that only Infinity Ward has been able to deliver so far.
