The Most Important Things About DMZ at a Glance: Release, Price & Content

    • Release: DMZ launches on October 23, 2026 (part of the MW4 launch).

    • Is DMZ free? No, unlike the MW2 version, DMZ is now part of the main game and not a separate Free-to-Play mode. So if you want to play the new Extraction mode, you’ll need to buy MW4 (70 euros for PC / 80 euros for console).

    • New Map: DMZ is set in the new Hajin region. This is a fictional region on the border between the Korean Peninsula and Russia that has become a crisis zone.

    • Player Hub: Another new feature is the Forward Operating Base (FOB). You can extensively expand this new headquarters in DMZ.

    • Dedicated Level System: DMZ features its own progression system ranging from Level 1 to 70.

    • Gameplay Focus: More risk, threat levels, AI enemies, bosses, and PvP.

Forward Operating Base (FOB): The New Headquarters

One of the biggest new features is the Forward Operating Base. This command center serves as an interface between your missions and the management of your progress.

The camp starts out as a simple outpost but can be expanded and upgraded into a fully equipped base with numerous new sections. You essentially get an additional progression system that grows alongside you.

    Stations Available at Launch

    • DMZ Missions: In the Operations Center, you’ll find all the missions and assignments for your rounds. These will help you get started in the game, tell the story of DMZ, and offer greater challenges and rewards.

    • Operator: Here you can manage your Operator, check their Traits, and select them for the next mission.

    • Stash & Loadout: In the Stash, you can store your loot or crafted gear for future missions and assemble your Operator’s next loadout.

    • Shooting Range: Test equipped weapons and attachments at your leisure before taking them into the field.

    • Survival Kits: Themed loot packs to equip or use in the crafting system.

    • Mission: Behind barbed wire, a heavy military helicopter awaits to fly you directly to the restricted zone—the starting point for every mission in DMZ.

So, you’ll handle all your preparations through the FOB before embarking on a new mission. If you successfully complete missions in Hajin, you can upgrade and expand your base by unlocking new stations.

    Unlockable Stations Through Progress

    • 3D Printer: Use extracted resources to easily craft your own gear and consumables.

    • Gunsmith: At the gunsmith, you can customize looted weapons with in-game cash or craft new weapons using the appropriate blueprints.

    • Merchant: Offers a daily rotating selection of weapons and gear in exchange for DMZ Cash.

    • Boss Board: Get information on powerful lieutenants and commanders, whom you can then hunt down and eliminate. Doing so will earn you plenty of XP and valuable gear.

    • Bounty Leaderboard: List of the most successful PvP bounty hunters and killers in the game. Players who attack others earn bounties and become lucrative targets for bounty hunters.

    • Dog Tag Showcase: Show off your trophies from defeated opponents.

    • DMZ Progress: A dedicated unlock path for DMZ where you can earn printer recipes, new FOB stations, and other content.

New Hajin Map: Locations & Danger Levels

The missions take you into the dangerous Hajin restricted zone. The new map is closely tied to the events of Modern Warfare 4’s single-player campaign and depicts a contested border region in the tri-border area between North and South Korea as well as Russia. The map offers a varied mix of urban areas, dense forested outskirts, and heavily guarded industrial and military complexes.

Points of interest include, among others, the 14th Political Prison, the Chang-san Air Base, the Mirae General Hospital, the Wolves Stadium, and the Haneul Nuclear Reactor. So there are a variety of locations, each offering different danger levels. The more dangerous a region is, the tougher the resistance you’ll face there—but you can also hope for better loot.

      • Story Missions: Missions with their own mini-stories that you complete for bigger rewards.

      • Dynamic Ops: Quick missions right in the zone that, if successful, grant supply drops of increasing rarity.

      • Free Exploration: You start the round without a fixed mission objective and either seek out your own targets during the match or roam around to ambush other players.

Gameplay & Progression: Higher Risk, Better Loot

The developers emphasize that DMZ will once again feature a noticeably higher level of risk, making successful rounds feel all the more rewarding:

      • Character Risk: If your Operator dies on a mission, you’ll lose valuable progress and gear. While they aren’t lost forever, you’ll have to spend resources to bring them back. This means missions won’t feel trivial anymore, because there’s always something at stake.

      • Loot Items That Can Be Permanently Lost: Any loot items you’re carrying during a run that you don’t successfully extract will be irretrievably lost if you die or drop them. So if you’ve scored some really valuable loot, you should do everything in your power to bring it safely back to base.

      • Proprietary Level System (1 to 70): Through missions, completed contracts, defeated bosses, earned bounties, and diligent looting, you’ll earn XP and unlock new blueprints and stations for the FOB on the DMZ Path. This is designed to keep you motivated in the long run and expand your options bit by bit.

      • Bounties and Bosses: The PvPvE gameplay is designed to be enriched by its own systems. Particularly aggressive PvP players receive bounties, making them attractive targets. There are also powerful AI opponents in the form of bosses that you can specifically hunt down for special rewards and extra XP.

      • Performance Rating: After each match, you’ll receive an After Action Report that evaluates your performance in the categories of combat, looting, and mission objectives. S-Tier ratings then grant you the best bonuses and are designed to encourage players to get the most out of each round.

In the new DMZ, CoD is barely recognizable

By moving away from Free-to-Play, using the new player base as the anchor for progression, featuring a dynamic map, and introducing harsher consequences upon death, DMZ aims to establish itself as a fully-fledged Extraction mode.

The new mode feels more complex and offers significantly more options than we’ve come to expect from Call of Duty. Whether this expanded concept will result in a cohesive Extraction experience capable of giving serious competition to genre counterparts like Hunt: Showdown, PUBG, or Arc Raiders remains to be seen on October 23. In any case, MW4 is likely to be a whole lot more exciting for Extraction fans.
