“This is exactly how CoD should be”—of all games, Black Ops 7 is currently proving that many fans are completely fed up with all that wall-running nonsense

Call of Duty’s latest experiment in Season 4 shows that maybe some things really were better in the past.

CoD Black Ops 7 recently introduced a new “Classic” mode. It’s designed to capture the feel of earlier games in the series from the 2010s and before, and to that end, it ditches some of the new features—especially when it comes to movement.

This radical change of direction has been well-received—and at the same time shows that many players aren’t all that fond of the over-the-top acrobatics in CoD.

What kind of mode is this?

Black Ops 7’s Classic Mode has been part of the game since the Season 4 update. It reduces movement complexity to a minimum and completely removes Omnimovement (i.e., the ability to sprint in all directions).

Wall jumps are out, and there’s no sliding. The loadout options have also been streamlined. The result: Black Ops 7 suddenly feels just like Black Ops 2 did back in the day.

What are the fans saying?

Many players are absolutely blown away by Classic Mode and are already calling on social media for the mode to become a permanent part of the game.

Under a clip from the mode titled “Simple Call of Duty is the best Call of Duty” by Faze player Scopecomments such as the following are piling up:

  • “It’s really wonderful to see that no one is sliding around wildly on the ground.”
  • “Finally, no more sliding—I’m totally in.”

Streamer Tdawg writes: “This is how CoD should feel. This is how Black Ops 7 should have been from the start.” He demands that the mode remain permanent.

What does it look like in MW4?

Some even go a step further: a few players are convinced that this streamlined, minimalist version of CoD must also be featured in the upcoming MW4.

While Modern Warfare 4 will do away with Black Ops 7’s Omnimovement, it will still rely on fast movements, sliding, and parkour-style climbing systems, as we can already show:

The bitter irony of the situation

There is a certain irony in the fact that Black Ops 7, of all games, with its clear focus on diving, sliding, and other acrobatic maneuvers, is now being touted as the ambassador for simple and down-to-earth CoD movement. After all, the game’s marketing campaign had fully relied on precisely these features.

Apparently, there is a growing group of players who prefer the old-school model. In the 2000s and 2010s, clever positioning was clearly the main focus in CoD.

Since then, the shooter series has oscillated between increasingly fast and spectacular movement mechanics like wall-running, diving, & the like, and more grounded gameplay, as seen in the 2019 MW reboot.

Have you tried the new mode yet? What’s your general philosophy when it comes to movement in shooters? Feel free to leave a comment!
