Even more frames with even better pictures? Nvidia has announced a major update to its DLSS upscaling technology

Gamescom is just around the corner and as part of one of the biggest gaming trade shows in the world, Nvidia has now announced (DLSS 3.5).

Reminder: DLSS stands for Deep Learning Super Sampling and describes Nvidia’s upscaling technology, which is supposed to provide a smoother picture and more frames when playing games.

But what is the new update supposed to bring?

DLSS 3.5 and proper lighting

According to Nvidia’s press release, the new DLSS version brings one crucial new feature in particular: ray reconstruction. It is said to significantly improve ray tracing graphics for all Geforce RTX graphics cards.

This is to be achieved by replacing manual optimisation of noise reduction with an AI network trained by NVIDIA supercomputers. This will allow developers to incorporate full ray tracing (path tracing) into their games without direct cooperation with Nvidia.

Short: Lights and reflections will look even better with RTX graphics cards than before. This is because with full ray tracing, light rays are not only calculated from the camera to the object, but also the paths they take when they encounter an obstacle. This should ensure physically correct light representation.

“Full real-time ray tracing lighting has been a major milestone in our journey towards photorealistic graphics in games, and we have achieved these goals with Cyberpunk 2077’s RT Overdrive mode, Minecraft with RTX, and Portal with RTX. With the addition of Ray Reconstruction in NVIDIA DLSS 3.5, developers can use AI to enhance the worlds they create by taking image quality further than previously thought possible. “

These games have already been announced

Nvidia has also announced some games that will already use DLSS 3.5 in the near future:

  • Alan Wake 2 (27 October 2023)
  • Cyberpunk 2077 & Cyberpunk: Phantom Liberty (September 2023)
  • Portal with RTX Upgrades (Fall 2023)

GeForce Now is also expected to run DLSS 3.5 when Alan Wake 2 and the Cyberpunk DLC are released on the platform.

You’re at gamescom? You can find Nvidia and DLSS 3.5 in hall 2.1, stand 10A.
