Anyone thinking about diving into one of Paradox Interactive’s complex strategy games should be prepared for a bit of a learning curve.

Anyone diving into a strategy game from Paradox Interactive expects a learning curve. However, few titles have a learning curve as steep as the Swedish developers’ WWII simulator, Hearts of Iron 4.

The verdict of a true expert proves that even hundreds of games are barely enough to master every system. With nearly 8,000 hours under his belt, one user draws a remarkable conclusion about the game.

The experienced strategist has a clear message for newcomers: If you really want to get the hang of HoI4, you’ll need an enormous amount of patience.

The strategy behemoth from Paradox

Hearts of Iron 4 was released in 2016 and has grown over the years into a massive strategy heavyweight. Thirteen expansions have fundamentally changed the gameplay. Today, complex supply lines, fuel depots, modularly designed tanks, and specialized aircraft determine victory or defeat in this virtual World War II.

Anyone leading one of the countless playable nations here must manage industry, research, diplomacy, and divisions all at once. The game begins on January 1, 1936, or shortly before the outbreak of war on August 14, 1939. The Ironman mode, in particular, leaves no room for mistakes: a single automatic save prevents you from reloading after making errors.

100 Hours for the Basics, 1,000 for the Rest

It’s precisely this level of detail that ensures enormous playtimes. Steam user MLG Aleks had clocked exactly 7,912 hours at the time of his (positive) review in 2025.

He has since come a good deal closer to his goal of 10,000 hours: He currently has 9,651 hours in Hearts of Iron 4 under his belt. His next goal is 10,000 hours. Despite his enthusiasm, he warns newcomers against having unrealistic expectations.

In his review, he describes the arduous learning process: “If you want to play Hearts of Iron 4, don’t forget that it takes 100 hours to understand the basics and 1,000 hours to grasp the rest.” Despite this extreme time commitment, he remains loyal to the game, even if his personal life suffers as a result.
