GTA Roleplay enjoys great popularity on YouTube and Twitch. Now, however, the developers are cracking down on the rules for the RP servers

Roleplay has become an integral part of GTA V. Thanks to a wide variety of servers, the game from 2013 can be found among the most popular categories on the streaming platform Twitch. Now, however, there are new rules for the servers. What does this mean for the roleplay community?

How is the business with the RP servers going?

Currently, GTA roleplay servers often work with content creators. Big streamers usually have deals with the operators and are paid to play on certain servers and stream this content.

The operators in turn generate revenue by monetising various content. This includes, for example, the purchase of loot boxes and in-game items for real money or various advertising deals.

However, the deals of the RP servers have often been criticised because they are sometimes dubious offers with high amounts of money that raise suspicions of money laundering.

These are the new roleplay rules

GTA V developer studio Rockstar Games and Take-Two are now cracking down on the rules of the popular roleplay servers. On 18 November they released a statement containing the new bans.

While the developers stress that they want to continue to encourage the passion and creativity of the players, they want to significantly restrict the commercial use of the servers. This includes:

  • Ban on the sale of lootboxes for real money.
  • Ban on the sale of cryptocurrencies
  • Banning promotional deals that generate revenue
  • Ban on the use of cryptocurrency or crypto-assets such as NFTs

Why are developers only now taking the initiative?

The case of the RP server of the rapper Lil Durk, among others, was decisive for the new rules.

On a website one could buy various items for the server “Trenches” for real money. Take-Two recognised a clear profit motive here and asked the operators to close the server.

With the new regulations, Take-Two and Rockstar Games are significantly restricting the current business model of GTA Roleplay servers. The operators, who currently earn a lot of money with the servers, will have to adapt to the regulations willy-nilly.
