The Big Daddies from Bioshock actually look much worse than feared

You can only meet a Big Daddy with a helmet in Bioshock – and that’s a good thing. Because without a helmet, the Little Sister protectors are even scarier

If you want to get your hands on the precious currency Adam really quickly in Bioshock, there’s no getting around the Little Sisters and their protectors. The so-called Big Daddies are extraordinarily resilient, deal out powerfully and are simply not a personality you want to meet.

Another special feature of the Big Daddies: they can only be seen permanently in their armour. What is hidden underneath? A question that cannot really be answered, at least within the game. Two somewhat older drawings, however, provide an explanation that, while not entirely new, is still a successful recipe for a nightmare.

When a Big Daddy takes off his helmet

Normally, most Big Daddies cannot take off their helmet and armour at all, because they are connected to the body itself and form a unit. One of the rare exceptions is Delta, the protagonist from Bioshock 2, who takes off his helmet right at the beginning of the game.

Nevertheless, before the release of Bioshock, the developers at Irrational Games thought about what the Big Daddies might look like underneath the helmet. This much can be revealed: It’s not a particularly pleasant sight and what’s shown goes far beyond a slightly scarred head.

This picture gives us an idea of why Irrational Games probably decided not to depict a helmetless Big Daddy. The artbook also states that the developers deliberately wanted to avoid a revelation within the game.

For the already mentioned Bioshock 2, 2K Marin then took over the development. There is no direct reveal of the traditional Big Daddies there either, but the art designers had their idea as well. In one artwork it can be seen how underneath the heavy armour there is just a pile of skin with flesh that just sort of hangs together.

How about Bioshock 4?

Whether the Big Daddies will return in the future and their appearance will be explained in more detail, meanwhile, remains open. While it has been known for some time that a new Bioshock is being worked on, there aren’t many details yet. However, it is likely that the developer studio Cloud Chamber will turn to a new scenario:

There has not yet been an official announcement regarding a new Bioshock game. Presumably, fans of the series will have to wait quite a while for a sequel. However, earlier job postings give hints of open world and RPG elements.
