The next installment in the castle-building series was originally scheduled to be released in 2026, but Early Access won’t begin until April.
Although Stronghold hasn’t been a series where we can be guaranteed to be satisfied with every new installment for quite some time, it still has many fans. In particular, the remakes of the original game and Crusader have reignited hope within the community.
Now it’s up to Stronghold 4 to live up to that hope. The latest installment was set to launch in Early Access in 2026 and, as a demo, has already attracted a surprisingly large number of players on Steam. But if you enjoyed the demo and can’t wait for the Early Access release, there’s some disappointing news: Stronghold 4 has been delayed!
In a new press release on November 3, the development studio Firefly announced that Stronghold 4 will not celebrate its Early Access release on December 7 as planned, but rather a few months later. It will now launch on April 20, 2027.
More on that later
The press release simply states that the delay is due to certain aspects of development taking longer than originally anticipated. On top of that, the developers hope that the Early Access version will already be running as smoothly as possible. The developers would rather use the extra development time during Early Access to add new content and implement fan feedback.
To keep fans from getting too upset about the delay, there’s a small consolation: Stronghold 4 will launch right at the start of Early Access with an additional campaign. Specifically, this refers to the economic campaign, which was originally supposed to be added later during Early Access.
In this campaign, the focus is more on producing enough goods in your castle. Attacks and sieges are the absolute exception here.
However, it’s still the case that Stronghold 4 won’t launch on April 20 with all the planned content. Online multiplayer and a cooperative skirmish mode are still set to follow during the Early Access period.
Game modes available from the start also include a story campaign, a skirmish mode, free-build mode, and a single-player skirmish path.
Will Stronghold 4 Be a Success Again?
It will, of course, be incredibly exciting to see whether Stronghold 4 will restore the series’ popularity among its fans or face similar problems to virtually every game since Stronghold 2. What’s clear this time is that the developers are drawing heavily on the original Stronghold. The game almost feels like a remake and introduces hardly any new features. Additionally, the story serves as a prequel to the campaign of the first Stronghold.
It doesn’t sound particularly daring, but daring isn’t exactly what fans are probably craving right now. If you want to get a taste of Stronghold 4 right now, you can still try out the demo.
