Avatar: The Last Airbender launches on Netflix in February. The new trailer has collected millions of views within a few hours and has many fans excited

The wait for Avatar will soon be over: The live-action adaptation of The Last Airbender (The Lord of the Elements) will soon be launched on Netflix. All eight episodes will be released on February 22, 2024  and should finally make fans forget how much the legendarily miserable feature film in 2010 disappointed them.

The new trailer features numerous characters and locations that series fans have long been familiar with. And this faithful realization apparently meets the taste of most people: After less than 24 hours, the video has collected millions of views and hundreds of thousands of likes.

You can watch it for yourself here:

Why the trailer is so well received

The interest in numbers: The new Avatar trailer has shot to number 1 in the current YouTube trends. On the English-language Netflix account alone, the video has over 2.2 million views after 15 hours, plus many more on various other channels such as Comicbook.com and Netflix accounts in other languages.

Hundreds of thousands of upvotes and numerous enthusiastic comments on YouTube, but also on social media such as X (formerly Twitter), show how well the scenes are received by the Avatar community. Two elements in particular have received a lot of praise:

Appa: The sky bison was an important character in the cartoon and one that is very close to the hearts of many fans. He barely appeared in the 2010 movie, but in the Netflix series he now seems to be taking his rightful place. This goes down well, for example with this fan who was moved to tears:

Bending: Bending (i.e. controlling) the four elements is a central component of the Avatar universe. You can already see some of this in the trailer, from spectacular fire attacks to Aang’s iconic wind roller. This also makes for (enthusiastic comments).

This is what our expert says

Personally, I’m also really taken by the trailer. It’s amazing how close the costumes, the locations and even the soundtrack are to the original and yet how totally coherent they look in real life. Of course, nothing will ever surpass the animated series, but that’s not what I’m hoping for.

Above all, I hope that the Netflix series will make many new people aware of this great universe and that the brand will continue to grow in the coming years. Apart from the (very cool) comics, it’s been at low ebb for far too long.

I’m also really looking forward to experiencing fantasy again, which can also be fluffy and fun. Since Game of Thrones, the trend has clearly been towards dark epics full of intrigue and violence, but I’m really starting to long for a change.

Small point of criticism: I would have liked a colorful look. Instead, everything looks gray, darker and dirtier. That can certainly have its own charm, but that’s how almost all films and series look at the moment. The makers are welcome to turn up the saturation in the next season!
