An 80% discount on *Pax Autocratica* sent shockwaves through the gaming community. Was it a bad omen or an oversight by the developers?

A drastic price drop on Steam usually causes PC gamers to cheer. But when a title was suddenly offered at a whopping 80 percent discount just a few weeks after its release, alarm bells immediately went off for gamers.

This is exactly the scenario the community of the first-person shooter Pax Autocratica on October 1, 2026. Instead of the regular price of just under 30 euros, the sci-fi project—which launched in Early Access on August 10—was suddenly listed for just around six euros.

Instead of joy, however, horror reigned in the forums: Many backers feared the immediate end of development or the studio’s impending bankruptcy.

Discount Causes Confusion

The fan community’s fears are not unfounded. Pax Autocratica didn’t launch on Steam Early Access until August 10, 2026. Such a drastic price drop after such a short time could be interpreted as a bad omen, but it would also be very strange:

  • Pax Autocratica currently has 91 percent positive Steam reviews (out of a total of 3,954)
  • On release day, there were over 6,000 concurrent players on the servers at its peak.

It would be highly unusual in such a situation for the developers to abandon their project, shut down the servers, and—out of desperation—try to pay a few bills with the proceeds from the sale.

Pax Autocratica combines a dark single-player colony simulation with battles against AI enemies, much like in a first-person shooter. It features a roguelite system. As the ruler, you establish a totalitarian settlement on alien worlds, issue decrees, and control your subjects through propaganda, fear, or re-education. Captured enemies are indoctrinated or sacrificed for the state. From a first-person perspective, you lead your own troops into battle.

Accidental Sale Brings a New Wave of Players

To reassure the unsettled player base, the development studio Multiverse quickly responded on Reddit and admitted to an embarrassing mistake:

“I owe everyone an apology. The current 80 percent discount was accidentally enabled. The intended discount was 20 percent, but the wrong percentage was entered when configuring the promotion.

I understand how alarming an 80 percent discount can seem. Therefore, we want to make it absolutely clear: Pax Autocratica is not being abandoned, development is not being halted, and this is not a clearance or closing-down sale.”

The developers assured players that they are continuing to work “actively on the game and on the major Early Access updates.” In collaboration with Steam Support, the issue was resolved—though apparently not before quite a few players had already taken advantage of the offer. In fact, player numbers skyrocketed, from 195 concurrent players on September 30 to a peak of 2,770 on October 2.

The head developer, who apologized for the oversight (“We’re truly sorry.”), is glad in hindsight that the sale was quickly reversed. “On the first day of the sale, I almost had a breakdown. […] If that had gone on for a week, our team would probably have lynched me.”
