With The Master’s Pupil, developer Pat Naoum has created an unprecedented piece of software, and much of it analogue.

Indie games are always good for surprises. There, visions can be realised for which big publishers don’t want to cough up the big budgets. One of these games is The Master’s Pupil, whose graphics were realised entirely with brush and paper.

What kind of game is this?

The Master’s Pupil is a hand-drawn, quiet puzzle adventure game by Pat Naoum. You take on the role of a small, white character who helps the legendary artist Claude Monet complete some of his greatest masterpieces. To do this, you move through a world that represents the painter’s artistic eye and solve all sorts of physics-based puzzles

During the course of the game, you will have to face the biographical challenges that made life difficult for Monet during his creative period. For example, the death of his wife Camille or an eye disease that threatened his eyesight.

During the game, you will have to face the biographical challenges that made Monet’s life difficult during his creative period.

The game will be released on 28 July 2023 for the PC and Nintendo Switch The American Switch version will cost $15. So we can assume that it will cost around 15 euros over here

Didn’t that already exist?

When it comes to handmade game graphics, Cuphead comes to mind, which was inspired by cartoons from the 1930s. This also affected the development process, as all graphics and animations were hand-drawn. However, the drawings were not coloured by hand but, albeit by hand, with Photoshop.

This again sets The Master’s Pupil apart, whose graphics were really created entirely on paper. This ludicrous undertaking took the developer a whole seven years of work. But as the trailers prove, the work was worth it.

What do you think of the game’s graphic style? Do you find the biographical story approach interesting? We are very interested in your opinion, so feel free to write it in the comments!
