The PS5 adventure featuring Faye will now be released on May 20, 2027. The development team is using the extra time to put the finishing touches on the game.
God of War Laufey has been delayed. The PS5 exclusive from Sony Santa Monica is avoiding the packed February release schedule and will instead launch on May 20, 2027.
Developer Sony Santa Monica announced the delayed release of the action epic in a brief post on social media. Although the studio did not cite specific reasons for the delay, it says it will use the extra time to put the finishing touches on Faye’s solo adventure.
Faye’s Journey Through the Everywhen: Santa Monica Asks for Patience as They Put the Finishing Touches on the Game
“Since the unveiling of God of War Laufey in June, we’ve been incredibly grateful for the immense enthusiasm surrounding Faye’s Journey Through the Everywhen. We certainly don’t take the trust placed in our studio for granted. Our goal remains to create an extraordinary experience that lives up to the passion and dedication of our fans,” the studio writes.
“With that in mind, we’ve decided to postpone the release of God of War Laufey to May 20, 2027,” the announcement continues. “We’ll use every minute until then to put the finishing touches on the game and realize its full potential. On behalf of the entire team, we thank you for your patience. We’ll be back soon with more updates.”
Faye Instead of Kratos: A Faster-Paced Combat System and Relief for the February Backlog
God of War Laufey is the first spin-off in the acclaimed PlayStation series in which Kratos does not take the lead role. This time, Faye guides you through a version of the afterlife where deities from a wide variety of mythologies clash. On top of that, the faster-paced combat system from earlier games in the series is making a comeback.
Of course, Kratos will return in future God of War games—and will even pop in here and there during Faye’s adventure. Whatever the next Kratos game ends up looking like, according to the developers, it will pick up directly where Laufey left off.
At least there’s a silver lining for everyone who’s already breaking a sweat over their massive, ever-growing backlog: February 2027 is already bursting at the seams—from the Fable reboot to Persona 4 Revival to Metro 2039. Hopefully, the delay of Laufey will give everyone a little more breathing room.
