Publisher Activision has announced more info on the next Call of Duty, which is still scheduled for release in 2021. Hopes are growing for a new warzone map.

The next Call of Duty will still be released in 2021, even though the name has not even been officially announced yet. However, the fact that the title is called Vanguard is now considered an open secret, as is the setting in World War II.

Publisher Activision has now fuelled these rumours in a recent quarterly report and is also giving fans hope for a new war zone map.

The most important information on Vanguard

Release: The next big Call of Duty is currently being developed by Sledgehammer Games and is scheduled to be released in the fourth quarter of 2021, i.e. between October and December 2021. According to Activision, new content will also be released regularly after the release, we again expect a season model.

Setting: The developers have not yet officially revealed what setting we can expect in Vanguard. But a hint from the quarterly report fits in perfectly with the persistent rumours that it’s the Second World War’s turn again: There was talk of “a setting that our fans know and love”.

Campaign, multiplayer and co-op: According to Robert Kostich, Vanguard offers both a single-player campaign, a separate multiplayer mode and a “co-op experience”. This could involve zombies, after all, they were already in Sledgehammer’s last World War CoD (WW2).

Platforms: The new Call of Duty will be released for PC, PlayStation 4, Playstation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. It is supposed to run smoothly on all platforms. Whether the LastGen version might have to do without certain features was not mentioned.

What happens to Warzone then?

In the report, Activision clarifies that there will again be deep integration of the new main game with the free Battle Royale Warzone:

“We are focused on the ongoing integration of Warzone and staying in close touch with our player base by further merging the paid and free experiences. There is significant innovation ahead in Warzone itself.”

The publisher did not go into further detail about what exactly is meant by these “significant innovations” – but we can make guesses. For some time now, dataminers and leakers have been reporting that Warzone is to receive an entirely new map after the release of Vanguard, set in the Pacific at the time of World War II. This is said to be much more than just a reskin:

Black Ops: Cold War already changed a lot in Warzone – however, dozens of new weapons caused annoying balancing problems for months, which have only improved noticeably in the last two seasons.

Nevertheless: Several well-known leak portals report that Vanguard is to be based on the Modern Warfare engine again – accordingly, the game mechanics are to be closer to those of Warzone than was the case with Cold War.

One problem overshadows everything

By the way, by far the biggest wish of most players was not a topic in the report: a solution for the massive cheater problem in Warzone. Under every announcement by the developers, players loudly demand effective anti-cheat measures.

At the moment, a particularly large number of cheaters are cavorting in the lobbies and spoiling other players’ rounds. Brazen free-of-charge campaigns make the situation even worse.

Will the situation improve in Season 5?
