A Call of Duty leaker is currently causing a stir with an interesting rumour. Will Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 have a tactical game mode à la Escape from Tarkov?

Since the official announcement of Modern Warfare 2 on 28 April, the rumour mill has been bubbling and every day there seems to be new information about the upcoming CoD title. The latest leak deals with a new game mode in Modern Warfare 2, but it could also become a stand-alone game.

Update from 24 June

For so long, rumours persisted that DMZ mode would be introduced in the next Call of Duty title, Modern Warfare 2. However, a report from leaker RalphsValve has now hinted that the Escape From Tarkov-like mode will be a standalone game after all.

According to the report, the “Project Nexus“, as the mode is referred to internally, has already been in development for four years and will be released in 2023. The report also states that it will be an open world game that will continue the campaign from Modern Warfare 2 and include aspects of PvE as well as PvP.

According to RalphsValve, the new game should be announced as early as August this year.

Update from 17 May

CoD leaker TheGhostOfHope has released new information on Modern Warfare 2 via Twitter. The rumours concern the new DMZ mode, which is said to come as the third mode in the new CoD title.

  • There will be a marketplace to trade in
  • Players will be able to collect skins, blueprints and more
  • At least four unique maps are in development
  • Dynamic weather and day/night cycle
  • Game mode supports PVE/PVP and online/offline mode
  • The new mode will already be in the beta of Modern Warfare 2

Obviously, the developers also want to provide the PVE community of Call of Duty with content. In recent titles, this has already been realised through the zombie mode. At the moment, it must be assumed that the marketplace serves to trade items that can be used in the respective matches. Whether the developers also plan to trade skins, pendants or other cosmetic items is still uncertain.

New game mode

Leaker TheGhostOfHope is currently causing a stir with a tweet. According to his information, there will be a third game mode in Modern Warfare 2, which is based on the tactical-realism shooter Escape from Tarkov. The new mode is to be called “DMZ”, will be large and require a certain amount of maintenance. The new match variant is to be introduced in time for the BETA. What the abbreviation “DMZ” is supposed to stand for was not revealed. In a military context, “DMZ” stands for “demilitarised zone”, i.e. an area in which no military may be stationed.

In the long run, the introduction of such a mode could extend the life cycle of Modern Warfare 2 and keep the motivation for players permanently high. This would again speak for Activision having longer-term plans with Modern Warfare 2. However, the unknown source from TheGhostOfHope states that the mode will only be final when a broad public has been confronted with it.

“What you take, you can lose “

When asked by a Twitter user if the mode was similar to the gameplay of Escape from Tarkov, TheGhostOfHope replied, “What you take you can lose. It’s more tactical etc.”, which can be interpreted as a clear yes to the question. So it seems like the CoD developers are taking the hype around the Russian tactical shooter and trying out a new way for Call of Duty.
