To combat dwindling player numbers, the development studio is introducing new PvE modes, Team Deathmatch, and more accessible features to the game.

Bungie has announced drastic changes for its struggling shooter, Marathon. In the coming months, the game will significantly move away from its Extraction roots. The new mission? The studio aims to create more accessible experiences with varying levels of intensity and time commitment.

In a blog post published last night, Bungie outlined its short- and long-term vision for the future of Marathon. According to the post, the team wants to preserve the thrill of the existing Extraction mode for all those who love it. At the same time, other players will be given new ways to experience the world and find the exact level of difficulty that suits them best.

Roadmap for Fall and Winter: Nightfall Refresh and Symbiosis PvE Mode

It all starts with the Nightfall Refresh in October. This update fundamentally revamps the current gameplay experience. It introduces both a regular and a permanent (and free) NuCaloric Rewards Pass. In addition, there will be regular Sponsored Kit queues—meaning matchmaking with provided gear instead of your own loot. The game will also grant you longer time windows to access the endgame area, the Cryo Archive.

In December, the focus shifts to the Symbiosis PvE mode. The team describes this as the first major step toward the future. Here, you can experience the game with significantly less pressure. The update also introduces an experimental Team Deathmatch mode for anyone who isn’t a fan of pure Extraction gameplay. On top of that, December will bring a new Shell, a heavily revamped Perimeter map with new zones, a brand-new PvE Pinnacle encounter, and a fresh mushroom-themed aesthetic.

Major Overhaul in March: New Onboarding and a Shift Away from a Pure Extraction Focus

However, the truly massive changes are coming this March. Concrete details are still scarce. Nevertheless, Bungie has already highlighted several key areas on which the studio is fully focusing. These are intended to noticeably improve the state of Marathon. They include an interconnected system of permanent PvE, PvP, and PvEvP experiences, as well as a completely new onboarding process for newcomers. You can also look forward to a more focused questline with a stronger story, a new zone, and a new alien enemy.

Bungie is also planning various levels of intensity and time commitment. Solo players and crews will have more options. In general, getting started in Marathon and learning the mechanics should be much more accessible. The new experiences specifically focus on co-op, competitive play, and pure survival. All in all, this seems like a massive departure from Marathon’s original concept and its core gameplay as an extraction shooter.

Dwindling player numbers on Steam: Can Bungie pull off a turnaround?

While this core gameplay impressed everyone who could handle Marathon’s grueling challenge, it was simply too off-putting for the masses. And although Marathon got off to a good start, the title continues to struggle on PC with declining player numbers. Can Bungie still turn things around? I hope so! Despite its weaknesses and the hurdles it’s faced so far, Marathon was a bold release with many strengths—most notably its distinctive art style. If Bungie—which, by the way, is currently making some surprising changes to Destiny 2—can boost the shooter’s appeal and keep the Extraction option for hardcore fans, the future for Marathon might still look bright.
