The expansion is called Songs of the Past.It is scheduled for release in 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. More information will be available in late summer 2026, likely sometime in July, August, or September at the latest.
We’ll once again play as the Witcher Geralt of Rivia, as the official description indicates. Geralt can also be seen in the first released artwork, wearing his familiar outfit but holding a striking third sword. This weapon is sure to play an important role in the story:
Development is taking place incollaboration with the studio Fool’s Theory, which consists partly of former Witcher developers and which you may know from their own dark role-playing gameThe Thaumaturge
What kind of monster is that in the picture? It looks like a tree spirit with a sort of horned crown. Is this our new major antagonist? Or perhaps a creature we need to free? The die-hard experts on Eastern European folklore among you are welcome to share your personal theories in the comments!
Here’s how it came to light:Months ago, a rumor was circulating in the video game world—allegedly, another expansion was in the works, ten years after the release of the supposedly final add-on, Blood and Wine. On May 27, 2026, the rumor gained new momentum due to a premature announcement from CD Projekt itself, which appeared in a Polish-language Witcher 3 launcher. Within minutes, everything had already been deleted, but of course, the internet records everything.
Presumably, the developers had actually planned a reveal during a stream on May 28, 2026. It’s possible the announcement was moved up at the last minute to limit the damage caused by the leak.
There’s also some news regarding the base game; at least, we understand that the new system requirements for the expansion will also apply to The Witcher 3. Among other things, an SSD will be mandatory, and Windows 10 is a thing of the past.
Well, we had the news about the latest leaks online for just 15 minutes before CD Projekt Red posted their announcement. What exciting times for RPG fans, especially since Warhorse pulled off a similar surprise double reveal just a few days ago. Are you excited about a third expansion for The Witcher 3?
