To film Wordless Forest, the developer ventured deep into the wilderness himself.
Game development can sometimes reach extreme proportions. GTA 6, for example, is costing Rockstar $3 billion, with hundreds of developers working on the mega-title. But it doesn’t always take big numbers to show just how much work can go into a video game.
Dogus Cagrici, the developer behind Wordless Forest, is a prime example of this. As a solo developer, he has single-handedly handled the scripting, coding, and acting over the past few years—which he recorded in the real wilderness.
“The exhaustion on the screen is 100 percent real”
In the case of Wordless Forest, according to his own statementsit was solely its developer who stood in front of and behind the camera. That in itself is impressive, but to make his “interactive survival thriller” as authentic as possible, Cagrici really put his all into it.
For the shoot, he spent 40 consecutive days in the Turkish wilderness, hiking through remote forests and crossing raging rivers. He always had his video equipment with him, which he used to capture his genuine emotions.
From completely exhausting hikes through the bear-infested forests of Yenice to filming in the freezing rivers of Muğla in soaking-wet clothes—the physical strain was endless. The exhaustion on screen is 100 percent real.
He reportedly hiked for miles every day without a vehicle, survived several falls, and nearly broke his foot a few times. All of this so that players could understand his emotions in Wordless Foresteven without dialogue.
What is Wordless Forest actually about?
The game’s title is—brace yourself—meant quite literally, as it aims toget by entirely without spoken words. You control a silent protagonist who wakes up in the middle of the wilderness and can’t remember his name. All you have left is observation.
In the cinematic scenes, you take responsibility for him and make decisions that determine life or death. Wordless Forest is said to feature four different endings, with no puzzles or quick-time events.
Wordless Forest is set to release on August 24, 2026, on Steam.
