NVIDIA GeForce released a ray tracing trailer for Lord of the Rings: Gollum yesterday afternoon. Even though the graphics definitely look better, they still divide the community.

Ever since Daedalic Entertainment and Nacon showed the first scenes from Lord of the Rings: Gollum, fans have been skeptical. This isn’t necessarily because of the story, but much more because of the graphics, which don’t quite want to meet modern demands.

The ray-tracing trailer released yesterday also provides a fair amount of ridicule. For example, one mocking comment reads “It’s nice to see old games like Quake, Portal, and LOTR: Gollum getting ray tracing. “

Looking at Daedalic’s previously released titles, it’s not surprising that the graphic designers are having a bit of a hard time with Lord of the Rings: Gollum. After all, the German developer studio has so far stuck more to a comic style and point and click adventures . The fact that the first step towards realistic graphics is not entirely successful is therefore not entirely surprising.

In addition, the developers commented on character design during a showcase and explained that Gollum perceives other people in a distorted way. That’s why, for example, elves have oversized eyes and a rather sickly appearance.

I personally can forgive this graphic style because of this showcase. That the developers are also fans of The Lord of the Rings can be seen after a few minutes. The Daedalic team seems to be full of enthusiasm behind Lord of the Rings: Gollum, which should also make us as fans optimistic.

Lord of the Rings: Gollum will be released on May25 for PC, PlayStation and Xbox, and at a later date for the Nintendo Switch.
