This Is How Big the World of GTA 6 Will Be
It’s been clear for some time now that GTA 6 will feature the largest map of any Rockstar game to date. In an interview with Edge magazine, Rockstar Games has finally provided concrete details. According to the article, the map of GTA 6 is almost exactly twice as large as that of GTA 5.
However, sheer size alone isn’t everything—much of it in GTA 6 is actually covered by water. As for the actual landmass that players can explore, Rockstar says it’s similar in size to the playable areas of GTA 4, GTA 5, and even Red Dead Redemption 2.
In addition to the size of the world, Rockstar is keen to emphasize that all areas were deliberately designed by hand and that there is an incredible amount to discover everywhere: You can go anywhere, to any location you want, and so many people have put a lot of thought into that place.
Twelve new screenshots
In addition to the new information about the map and game world, the preview also includes twelve previously unseen screenshots of GTA 6. Among other things, the images show Jason, Lucia, the police officer Mendez, and fresh details from the game world of Leonida. Did you know, for example, that there will be hammerhead sharks in GTA 6? Well, now you do! We’ve included the screenshots for you in the following gallery:

About the Open World
- Freely explorable game world right from the start: The open world of GTA 6 is set to open up early in the story and be freely explorable on foot and by vehicle. If, after the story begins—which still takes place within a fixed tutorial framework—you feel like exploring Vice City or the swamps of the Grasslands, you can do just that. In games like GTA 3 or 4, you were initially restricted to a specific part of the game world, which gradually expanded. GTA 6 is not expected to tie your access to the world to a specific point in the story’s progression.
- More Interiors: While previous GTA games offered very limited options in terms of buildings you could enter, in GTA 6 you’ll be able to enter significantly more buildings with well-designed interiors.
- Usable Public Transportation: Jason and Lucia can travel through the world of Leonida not only by car but also via a functional network of buses and trains.
- Longer Days and Nights: The day-and-night cycle lasts significantly longer than in GTA 5.
Police System and Crime:
- Police Dogs: Dogs will participate in police chases.
- More Detailed Manhunt System: The police use information about your location, clothing, and accomplices.
- Criminal Profile: Depending on your behavior, you’ll be rated on a scale from
Pro
toIncorrigible
, represented by angel and devil icons. Your criminal profile can influence how the story of Jason and Lucia unfolds.
- Non-lethal Alternatives: You can knock out enemies or intimidate them into surrendering before resorting to lethal force.
- Tracking Devices: Certain cars are equipped with tracking devices, making them even harder to steal.
- More dangerous criminal activities: Robberies and car chases are designed to feel less predictable. For example, drivers can fight back against thefts and even draw their own weapons.
Miscellaneous:
- Switch characters at any time: Just like in GTA 5, you can switch back and forth between characters
- Detailed NPC behavior: Pedestrians behave differently depending on which neighborhood they’re in. In rougher neighborhoods, people are more likely to confront you rather than flee. Additionally, encounters are supposed to be less predictable: During a robbery, for example, passersby might try to stop you or fight back. Other NPCs will challenge you to street races.
- Weapons attract attention: Walking around with a shotgun drawn will alert bystanders—even if you never aim at anyone. Dropping your weapons can often defuse tense situations and prevent a wanted level from being triggered. In other neighborhoods, bystanders will directly challenge you if you’re holding a weapon.
- Quick Refueling: According to the developers, a stop at a gas station should only take a few seconds; a full tank lasts quite a while. If the fuel gauge drops into the red zone, you should still be able to explore at your leisure for quite a while before the car actually runs out of gas.
- Food and drink provide buffs: Coffee boosts your stamina, and protein shakes grant a health bonus.
If you want to know even more details, you can find the full cover story in the print edition 430 of Edge Magazine; we’ve already linked to the online version in the introduction to this article. But you won’t have to wait much longer before you can play GTA 6 yourself. Rockstar’s new gangster game is set to be released in just three weeks, on November 19, 2026.
