Ironically, it’s the head of Twitch who’s now giving a pretty specific timeframe for the GTA 6 Online release—and it probably isn’t completely out of thin air.
GTA 6 is set to launch in just over two months, and one major question remains unanswered: What’s the deal with multiplayer?
Officially, Rockstar currently describes the game explicitly as a single-player experience set to launch on November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The studio hasn’t announced a new multiplayer mode—GTA Online 2 or whatever it might end up being called—at all yet.
Now, however, there’s the most concrete hint yet as to when that might change. And it comes from the head of Twitch, of all people.
The Twitch CEO Suddenly Mentions 2027
Twitch CEO Dan Clancy spoke with Bloomberg at the Tokyo Game Show about the expected impact of GTA 6 on his streaming platform. Initially, the discussion centered on the fact that other publishers apparently want to avoid the November release as much as possible.
Things got more interesting, however, when Clancy spoke about the coming year. Twitch had spent a lot of time discussing Rockstar’s plans with them and how the developers could involve streamers. Then he got quite specific:
“You’ll see this big spike with GTA 6, but an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer.”
When Clancy says “next year” in September 2026, he can of course only mean 2027. And the exciting part isn’t so much the assumption that GTA 6 will eventually get multiplayer. Hardly anyone would have seriously expected otherwise anyway.
But the way Clancy speaks so matter-of-factly about a launch next year, immediately after explaining that Twitch had spoken at length with Rockstar about its plans… we can assume there’s something to it and that you won’t be going online in GTA this year.
The fact that Rockstar releases single-player and multiplayer with a certain time gap is also nothing new: GTA 5 was released on September 17, 2013, and GTA Online followed on October 1—exactly two weeks later. With Red Dead Redemption 2, the gap was already wider, as the main game was released on October 26, 2018, and the phased Early Access for Red Dead Online began on November 27.
If Clancy is correct about 2027, the gap would be even wider. Even a launch right at the beginning of January would still be more than six weeks after the release of the main game. But Rockstar’s marketing experts surely had a reason for this: In November, the focus will initially be on the campaign featuring Jason & Lucia, and the online component will reignite the GTA hype sometime in 2027.
