Nintendo President Furukawa admits: The Switch 2 price increase doesn’t fully offset the rising costs – games are expected to bridge the gap.

Last week brought yet another price hike: The Nintendo Switch 2 will become more expensive starting this coming September.

And apparently, we have to be cynically grateful that it’s “only” 30 euros more here—because according to Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa, the announced price increase isn’t enough to fully cover the increased costs.

The Cost Drivers of Switch 2

Nintendo cited the following as the main reasons for the moveaccompanying press releasea series of market changes, the duration of which is assessed as “medium to long term.”

According toReutersin addition to the universally dominant rise in memory prices, the weak yen and higher crude oil prices.

  • This combination has driven production costs up significantly—and, according to Furukawa, can no longer be offset by internal measures.
  • What’s more, according to the Nintendo CEO (viaVGC) is not enough to fully cover the increased manufacturing costs.
  • The price adjustments for the Nintendo Switch 2, which vary by region, are in turn based on the extent to which the respective markets are affected by these developments.

Software to Overcome the Price Barrier

Furukawa acknowledges, however, that higher console prices represent a barrier to purchase. His solution: a growing and attractive lineup of games.

We will prepare a robust software lineup to increase the value of the Switch 2 [,,,] We will work hard to overcome this hurdle.

After all, the Nintendo boss remains optimistic in this context; after all, gaming successes like Pokémon Pokopia have shown that attractive software is the key driver behind console sales.
