After Halo Studios—formerly 343 Industries—had already been hit by layoffs on multiple occasions, there’s now new trouble brewing. Several employees are accusing boss Pierre Hintze of abusing his power, which they say is destroying the brand.
Halo fans really don’t have it easy. The heyday of the legendary shooter series is long gone; for years, Microsoft has been shuffling the brand back and forth between its in-house studio 343 Industries—now renamed Halo Studios—and doesn’t seem to know exactly where it wants to take this high-quality shooter franchise in the future.
OnJuly 28Halo: Campaign Evolved, a remake of the beloved first game in the series, is set to be released, but just before that, the developers are facing serious trouble once again. Several current and former employees of Halo Studios are currently making serious allegations against the studio head. Pierre Hintze is accused of establishing a veritable reign of terror and of repeatedly belittling and berating employees.
According to the allegations, the development of Campaign Evolved has also suffered under Hintze’s haphazard leadership. The employees speaking out now view their boss as a threat to the future of the Halo series.
What is it all about in detail?
The statements come from anew videoby the well-known Halo YouTuber Rebs Gaming. In the video, Rebs Gaming cites several current and former employees of Halo Studios—who remain anonymous to protect their sources—to describe a destructive leadership culture at the development studio.Studio boss Pierre Hintze is said to be primarily responsible for this.
He has reportedly drawn attention on multiple occasions for verbally attacking employees, and his shouting has intimidated some teams to such an extent that they deliberately held back on their projects to avoid a direct confrontation with the boss. Hintze is also said to have a difficult stance on work-life balance. When asked about the issue, the boss reportedly said he didn’t give a damn
. Employees who questioned working full-time were also allegedly treated poorly by the boss.
Even supposed friends were not spared Hintze’s attacks. Michael Farney, the former executive producer of Campaign Evolved, was also reportedly the victim of verbal abuse, which ultimately led to his demotion, long-term sick leave, and later his dismissal. In the video, Rebs Gaming reports that, as a result, several employees complained about Hintze’s leadership styleto Microsoft’s HR department. However, HR did not listen to those affected.
Problems with Campaign Evolved
Under Hintze’s leadership style, the development of the upcoming Halo remake is also said to havesuffered. According to the employees quoted, the boss is said to have failed, among other things, to establish a clear timeline with fixed milestones. Instead, he repeatedly threw the priorities of the teams involved into disarray and rearranged them, which resulted in aoverall chaotic development process
A lot of people worked very hard to save Campaign Evolved. The team pulled together and saved the project. They deserve credit for pulling the game out of the hole Pierre created. These people want to and are trying to make Halo a success
, comments YouTuber Rebs Gaming in the video.
Some of the employees quoted also fear that Hintze’s leadership style will completely destroy the Halo brand. After all, the franchise is already on a knife’s edge at Microsoft. After the latest installment in the series, Infinite, failed to deliver the hoped-for success, numerous positions at Halo Studios were cut during Microsoft’s recent rounds of layoffs. If the team can no longer deliver due to poor internal leadership, then more heads will undoubtedly roll soon.
In addition to Hintze, Art Director Chris Matthews is also facing criticism; he is said to have favored hiring candidates from his own circle of friends and to have repeatedly made inappropriate remarks to colleagues.
However, the allegations made by Rebs Gaming and the employee he cited cannot currently be independently verified. Microsoft has also not yet officially commented on the allegations. In the link box above, you can learn more about Halo: Campaign Evolved.
