Alongside the free engine upgrade, protagonist Skif finds himself caught up in a new conflict between Duty and Freedom. GSC promises dozens of hours of gameplay.

GSC Game World announced the release date for the “Cost of Hope” story expansion for Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl this afternoon.

According to the announcement, “Cost of Hope” will be released on August 20, 2026, alongside the free Update 2.0 for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5.

Plot and New Content in the Expansion

In the expansion, the long-standing conflict between the Zone’s leading factions—Duty and Freedom—continues to escalate, causing the fragile peace between the two camps to begin crumbling. This, in turn, could affect the fate of the entire Zone.

In Cost of Hope, you once again play as Skif, the protagonist of Stalker 2: Heart of Chernobyl: “A mysterious PDA signal draws him into events that unfold parallel to the main game’s story,” according to official sources.

“You’ll explore uncharted territories, encounter unexpected allies and enemies, discover powerful weapons, and experience a gripping new story. The expansion offers dozens of hours of fresh content. Your decisions will shape the future of the Zone in this major new chapter of the Stalker saga.”

Technical Upgrades and Studio News

The update to version 2.0 includes, among other things, the switch to the latest Unreal Engine 5, and the developers promise a wealth of new content and further improvements.

GSC Game World plans to reveal more details about Cost of Hope and Update 2.0 in the coming weeks.

Most recently, GSC founder Sergiy Grygorovych caused a stir when he claimed that Stalker 2 had already been profitable before its release thanks to deals with Microsoft. The developer studio denied these statements shortly thereafter.
