Devolver Digital confirms the new project: The series picks up where The Second Encounter left off and returns to the familiar gameplay of battling Mental’s horde.
Croteam and Devolver Digital have confirmed that Serious Sam: The Third Encounter is in an early stage of development.
Although the title is The Third Encounter, it is actually the seventh game in the main Serious Sam series. It’s best not to overthink it—in the end, it’s all about mowing down hordes of enemies anyway.
Direct Sequel Instead of a Prequel: Sam Sets His Sights on Mental’s Horde
The Third Encounter is set to pick up exactly where The Second Encounter left off: “No prequel,” they say. “No side stories. A true sequel. This time, Sam will strike Mental’s Horde right in the heart, and he means business.”
“The only thing standing between you and thousands of enemies is your weapon, and the only thing that matters is who pulls the trigger first. From desperate final battles to all-out assaults on Mental’s forces: The tension rises with every encounter as Sam heads toward the ultimate showdown.”
Back to the Series’ Roots: Classic Shooter Action Instead of a Roguelite Experiment
The latest installment in the series is Serious Sam: Shatterverse, a co-op roguelite first-person shooter for one to five players from Behaviour Interactive. It didn’t quite capture the series’ classic feel, so reviews on Steam are only “mixed”—the most recent ones are even “mostly negative.”
With the third installment in the Encounter series, the franchise is returning to its traditional gameplay and should offer fans more of what they actually expect from the series. A release date hasn’t been set yet, but you can already add the game on Steam to your wishlist.
