The survival prototype takes inspiration from Last of Us and already shows many strengths of the new Unreal Engine 5.

There is still a lack of games with Unreal Engine 5. No wonder, after all, Epic’s new code framework only recently appeared as an unfinished preview version. Nevertheless, some developers are already busy writing games with the new technology.

One exciting survival prototype is called Rooted. The game by indie developer Headlight Studio is obviously inspired by the PlayStation hit The Last of Us and uses several advantages of the UE5. For example, the Lumen lighting technology ensures atmospheric light changes and the character created with MetaHuman adjusts its posture to different surfaces.

But even apart from technical gadgets, the prototype can convince with a pretty setting. In one scene, the character trudges through a post-apocalyptic city between skyscrapers, then runs through a densely overgrown forest. The setting is strongly reminiscent of the harsh contrasts from the world reclaimed from nature in The Last of Us.

YouTuber Bluedrake42 shows off the gameplay footage of Rooted that has been released so far in a video:

This is what Rooted is supposed to offer

As we were writing these lines, a fresh Steam page for Rooted popped up. Therefore, we can now tell you how exactly the game actually wants to convince survival fans of itself. Although many questions still remain unanswered.

The story sounds gloomy, as is typical for the genre
: After a war with biological weapons, only a few people survived. You are one of them and fight alone or in co-op with friends in the remains of civilisation for daily survival. You are helped by animals that you can tame and train as companions.

You can also build your camp individually. You even have to take care of electrical and hydraulic elements! You will also be able to build and modify your weapons yourself, at least on paper.

Rather nebulous
: The developers write that one task is to fill out a bestiary. You are apparently supposed to create a book with the beasts of the game world, which indicates a large spectrum of dangerous creatures. However, nothing of this has been shown so far.

Overall, the Steam page, and also the material shown so far, looks like a project in an early stage of development. Accordingly, there is no release date for Rooted yet.

If you want to play a popular game right now, take a look at the mining survival sandbox of Core Keeper:

What is your first impression of Rooted? Do you pick up the setting or does it rather not meet your taste? Why or why not? Feel free to write us in the comments!
