Henry Cavill is following in the footsteps of Christopher Lambert in Chad Stahelski’s remake of Highlander, and the first images look promising.

Henry Cavill has long since hung up the silver blade of the witcher Geralt of Riva. But he will soon be wielding the sword of a very different swordsman in the cinema: that of the immortal Highlander Connor MacLeod!

A true action expert is responsible for the remake of the cult film from the 80s: Chad Stahelski, who was one of the best stuntmen and coordinators for many years and has now also made a name for himself as a director with the John Wick films.

This is what Henry Cavill looks like as Highlander

There is currently no trailer for Highlander, but Henry Cavill himself has now shared two first images. The 42-year-old actor writes on Instagram:

A happy first look at Highlander! It’s been quite a journey for me, which I’ll tell you about in due course. But it’s a special moment to be able to share this with you—I hope you like it.

The long road to the Highlander reboot

In fact, the production of Highlander has been anything but straightforward so far.  Rumors of a revival of the long-running action/fantasy franchise have been circulating since 2008. Filmmakers such as Justin Lin and Joan Carlos Fresnadillo were mentioned in the same breath.

Chad Stahelski has been confirmed as director since 2016 (via THR), and Henry Cavill came on board in 2021 (via Deadline). However, actual production was delayed several times and was finally scheduled to start in August 2025. But because Henry Cavill suffered an injury during his Highlander training, it wasn’t until early 2026 that production finally began.

To make matters worse, the production studio originally responsible for Highlander pulled the plug in May 2025. Lionsgate considered the $180 million budget too high and Henry Cavill as the lead actor too big a flop risk. (Cavill’s previous cinema productions had all crashed and burned).

Highlander is now being produced by Amazon MGM Studios, while Chad Stahelski has big plans for the franchise. Ideally, several films and TV series will follow.

But first, the new Highlander has to deliver. An official release date has not yet been set, but the film is not expected to hit theaters before the end of 2027.

Fans are keeping their fingers crossed: Please don’t mess it up!

Fans of Henry Cavill and/or Highlander are already optimistic, though. The images are being shared like crazy on social media, at  Reddit or X (formerly Twitter), there are hopeful to euphoric comments.

There is also a healthy dose of skepticism, because there is of course no guarantee that Stahelski and Cavill’s Highlander will be a hit. And one question in particular is on people’s minds in the comments: Will the new film also feature a Queen soundtrack? We can actually reassure you on that front.

By the way, if you’re wondering what Henry Cavill is up to these days, the former Witcher and Superman is still working on his TV series based on Warhammer 40K for Amazon. But be warned: it will be a while before it’s ready.
