Could PlayStation soon become entirely digital? Analyst Mat Piscatella predicts on Twitter that the age of physical discs is coming to an end. Nintendo could also only release digital versions of games in two generations’ time

According to some analysts, the next but one generation of consoles could become digital-only. This means that by the PlayStation 7 at the latest, Sony could stop selling discs and only make games available as digital downloads.
This could permanently change the future of gaming for millions of fans worldwide

If PlayStation really does switch to the digital-only ecosystem, it could reduce production costs, which could affect the purchase price of titles. However, not all gamers have the network performance required to download the ever-increasing number of games. This has already caused frustration in the community in the past.

PlayStation goes digital only – what could change?

If the next but one PlayStation generation is truly digital, this could bring a number of advantages. For example, retailers will no longer be able to start premature sales, thus avoiding leaks. In addition, waiting times for deliveries and possible damage to physical editions would be eliminated. This also means easier management of the game library

The PlayStation 7 is also expected to open up new business opportunities. Digital sales and subscriptions could be more profitable for Sony. This could lead to a wider range of game offerings. Developers could also provide updates and patches more quickly. However, the digital transition could also have a negative impact on the second-hand market for games. Without a physical copy, older titles can be difficult to resell, which could bring a huge change to the community over time. Without physical media, used games could be harder to resell. This could fundamentally change the way gamers buy and sell games
