In August, Nintendo is expanding its subscription service to include a popular GameCube hit and two completely new retro rarities that were never released back then.

A major update for Nintendo Switch Online is coming next month. It will also include new games and features for the Virtual Boy and GameCube Classics.

On August 13, Nintendo will finally add Super Mario Sunshine to the “Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics” app on the Nintendo Switch 2. Until now, this classic was only playable on Switch consoles via the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection, which is no longer officially available.

Expansion of the Virtual Boy Library and New Features

Earlier, on August 4, the Virtual Boy library grew by two absolute rarities: Nintendo released two additional games that were never released back then. Additionally, a new feature that had already been announced is now available: You can customize the screen colors to your liking.

The new additions are once again D-Hopper and Zero Racers. The latter was according to a former Nintendo employeea spin-off set in the F-Zero universe and was actually already completely finished at the time. Nevertheless, the racing game was never released.

Initially, the game was in development for the Virtual Boy under the name G-Zero. However, due to the hardware’s failure, the game was also dragged down with it.

Availability via subscription and remaining titles

Once the two new titles are added, a large portion of the original Virtual Boy library will be available through the Switch Online subscription. The service launched earlier this year and requires physical accessories to play.

Currently, Nester’s Funky Bowling, Panic Bomber, SD Gundam Dimension War, Space Squash, Virtual Fighting, Virtual Lab, Virtual League Baseball, and Waterworld are still missing from the library—it remains to be seen how realistic their release is given the licenses involved.
