With a new beta update, Sony is making PSSR 2 the default on the PS5 Pro.

Sony has begun rolling out a new update for the PlayStation Beta Program. It’s primarily aimed at PlayStation 5 Pro users and makes PSSR 2—released in March 2026—the default.

Over 100 games benefit from the update

TheBeta Programis available to PlayStation users free of charge and is completely voluntary. Those who choose to participate will be contacted by Sony via email when a new beta version is available.

PSSR 2 is the second version of Sony’s AI upscaler “PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution,” which works similarly to DLSS or FSSR.

When PSSR 2 was first launched, many games still had issues with it, which is why it was turned off by default and had to be manually enabled in the settings. This step is no longer necessary with the update, which sets the setting to “On” by default.

Sony believes that the quality of PSSR 2 is now good enough for all games that support PSSR to benefit from it. That’s over 100 titles that should now run even better.

However, this doesn’t completely remove the settings option. If you encounter any issues, you can still disable PSSR 2 in the settings and continue using the first version of PSSR.

Apart from that, the update also includes changes to Bluetooth, though these are only relevant for esports tournaments, where games are typically played via wired connections to avoid interference.

The update is currently in beta mode, which means that issues and bugs may still occur. Participant data is being collected and, ideally, used to further optimize the features. Once everything is working as intended, the update will be rolled out to the system. However, it may take several more months before that happens.
