A fan project has brought back Need for Speed: Underground 2 as a free browser game with MMO multiplayer. It’s not official, but it has over 7,000 players.
Need for Speed: Underground 2 is back: A fan project has revived EA’s 2004 racing classic as a free browser game, as reported by GameRant. The port is called Underground 2 Revived and, according to the project, runs on PC and smartphones without any purchase or installation required.
Online service for the original ended in August 2006, and the project itself has not been endorsed by EA. Underground 2 Revived supports up to 48 players on the same map. Players can organize car meets and race against each other. A chat feature allows players to converse with nearby drivers and friends.
On November 4, the project’s website listed more than 7,000 players in the game, nearly 3,000 of whom were in Free-Roam mode, where players drive without race objectives.
“My brother and I played this game together about 20 years ago. That’s why I tried to port it to the browser so we could play together again,” said the project’s developer.
It remains to be seen how EA will react to the unlicensed port.
