After several years, Activision is ending support for last-gen consoles—just as the PS5 is more expensive than ever.

Yes,Call of Duty: Black Ops 7was released not only for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, but also for the previous generation of consoles. For twelve years now, you’ve been able to play the series’ titles on PS4 and Xbox One, but that’s set tocome to a definitive end with the next installment.

“The next Call of Duty will not be developed for PS4”

The first rumors that Call of Duty would discontinue last-gen support began circulating as early as the beginning of last year. In March 2025, a leaker revealed that Modern Warfare 4 would be released in 2026 exclusively on the current generation of consoles.

A year later, this information is contradicted bypost on Xclaiming that MW4 is currently being tested on the PS4. The official Call of Duty X account is now debunking this very assumption:

Not sure where this came from, but it’s not true. The next Call of Duty is not being developed for PS4.

While this doesn’t confirm that the next CoD will be a new Modern Warfare installment, the current change in direction makes it seem likely. According to this, games in the Black Ops and Modern Warfare series will no longer follow one another in the future. Since Black Ops 7 was the most recent release, a new MW is all the more likely.

What is now completely undisputed, however, is which platforms will be supported—or rather, which ones won’t. The exclusion of the last generation of consoles comes at an inopportune time, though.

PS5 more expensive than ever

Since the PS5’s release in 2020, prices for all versions of the console have risen several times. Since early April 2026, the price tags for all models have been raised once againby 100 euros each.

For example, the PS5 Disc Edition now costs 650 euros instead of 550 euros, and the PS5 Pro has climbed from 800 euros to 900 euros. The reason for this is the current economic situation, which is leading to rising RAM and storage prices, partly due to the AI boom. You can learn more about this in the link box above.

So anyone who has recently enjoyed Call of Duty on their PS4 will be forced to switch to the now more expensive PS5 or PC in the future.
