Hytale places a strong focus on modding and is even holding a competition with prize money totaling $100,000.

Hytale, like its role model Minecraft, thrives on the creativity of its community. And with this sandbox adventure, the community is given a large toolbox to create its own content.

Developer Hypixel therefore recently launched a modding contest with substantial prize money. Studio founder Simon Collins-Laflamme explained in a post on X why Hytale is so heavily focused on modding.

“Modding is a cornerstone for Hytale”

In his post, Collins-Laflamme explains why they are so focused on this topic. He explains:

It’s not because we expect modders to do the work for us. It’s because I believe that the modding community will be one of the cornerstones of where we take Hytale next.

The Modding Contest is designed to recognize that and put the community’s creators in the spotlight so they can be seen, celebrated, and rewarded.

But there is another reason: the recruitment of new staff. It’s nothing new for studios to hire talented people from their own community, but Hypixel’s open approach to this is. The studio founder explains:

In recent months, most of the people we’ve brought onto the team (now over 70) were people we already knew and respected, and whom we’d watched doing great things, especially in the modding community. We don’t want to build a huge corporate machine with lots of people just giving orders. We’re building a small, agile team full of people who really get things done.

Collins-Laflamme believes that this approach will not only help them find new talent, but also stay connected to the people who care most about Hytale. The goal is to ensure the game’s long-term success.

Hytale went into early access at the beginning of the year, and several thousand mods can already be found on CurseForge already has several thousand mods – and the number is growing.

The mod competition will be held in three categories: game world, NPCs, and player experiences, with the winner receiving $10,000 in prize money. Second place will receive $7,500 and fourth place $2,500. Places 4 to 10 will receive $1,000, and the community will also be able to select five additional winners.
