On paper, the Devourer sounded like a cool idea. In the game, however, the new addition turns out to be a flash in the pan for many fans.
World of Warcraft is currently preparing for the release of its next major expansion, Midnight, but Blizzard is already struggling with the first controversy in the community even before the add-on has been released.
The culprit is the Devourer – the new specialization for the Demon Hunter class. Since the big pre-patch for Midnight on January 21, 2026, those who pre-ordered the expansion have been able to play the Devourer and are extremely disappointed.
Feels like a half-hearted implementation
There are heated discussions about the Devourer on social media. On Reddit, Blizzard is being accused of implementing the new specialization carelessly. Another post mockingly dissects the disappointing combat experience.
Essentially, fans’ outrage revolves around the following points:
- Combat: The Devourer hardly gets to use its most powerful and fun skills because it spends all its time preparing or building up other abilities—and then the enemy is already defeated.
- No weapons: There are currently hardly any weapons in the leveling phase that meet the Devourer’s requirements.
- No customization: The Void Elf Demon Hunters share many visual details with their Blood Elf relatives, which often doesn’t look right at all.
- No story: The sudden existence of the void elf demon hunters is only explained by a short quest, which apparently leaves many questions unanswered. This is particularly annoying for lore fans.

The community sometimes takes it with humor
Aside from very angry reactions, some fans are trying to cope with their disappointment about the Devourer with gallows humor, for example when it comes to the lack of visual customization options for the new specialization:
A raider caught on fire in Buried City Metro, went down without saying a word, and left behind a mountain of Familiar Ducks. I extracted with $2.8M. Still confused.

The bottom line is that the numerous reactions in the community make one thing clear: many fans are disappointed with how carelessly and, in some cases, ill-conceived Blizzard’s introduction of the Devourer into the MMO has been.
Apart from the new housing, the Devourer was supposed to be the big highlight of Midnight. At the moment, however, it is only one thing: one of the first sources of controversy.
Of course, we are also interested in your opinion about WoW: Have you already tried the Devourer yourself and do you agree with the negative feedback? Which aspects of the new specialization do you think Blizzard should revise most urgently before the release on March 3, 2026? Feel free to write your views on the topic in the comments!
