Black Mesa, the remake of Half-Life gets a mod for German voice output. Fans have re-dubbed all the dialogue.

The first Half-Life has aged noticeably: The shooter, which is now over 20 years old, clearly shows that it comes from an era before 4K resolution and ray tracing. Those who would like to experience the famous shooter again in a more modern form can recently turn to the remake Black Mesa.

Until now, however, the fan-developed remake could only be played with English dialogue. Now (other) fans have released a free mod for the fan remake that adds a complete German dubbing to the game. You can download it from (Steam Workshop).
For the mod, more than 4300 lines of dialogue have been dubbed in the last one and a half years and all choreographies have also been adapted. A total of 15 dubbing actors lent their voices to the project. You can hear how the German dialogue sounds in the video by the developers:

What is Black Mesa?

Black Mesa was developed by fans as a remake of the first Half-Life and released on Steam in March 2020. Since its release, the game has also received several updates, and has also been repeatedly enriched with mods by the community.

The remake reworks almost all aspects of the original Half-Life, but tries to stay true to the original. In doing so, it does such a good job that even developers at Valve prefer the remake to the original. Among other things, Black Mesa offers players improved graphics and new visual effects, gameplay improvements such as a new enemy AI, a new soundtrack and even completely new levels in the alien world Xen. You can see here how much the remake and the original differ visually:

Especially the Xen levels look beautiful in the remake thanks to modern technology – especially in comparison to the original, which has aged quite considerably in the meantime:

If you don’t own the remake yet, now is a good time to get your hands on it: Black Mesa is currently 75 percent off in the Steam Winter Sale and will only cost you just under 4 euros.

Updates are already in the works

If you want to play Black Mesa in German, you can add the mod to your game via the (Steam Workshop) as described above. Please note, however, that the German mod is a beta version. The German voice output still contains minor errors, and some content still needs to be added.

For example, the volume of the dialogues is sometimes incorrect and the English dialogues are still used in multiplayer. However, no critical bugs are known and the developers are already working diligently on the first updates and fixes for their mod. A complete list of all known bugs can be found on (Steam), there you can also find (Tips) how to fix some bugs of the Steam Workshop version.

What do you think of the new German dubbing? Is it a reason for you to play Black Mesa again or maybe even finally? How do you like the individual speakers? Feel free to write us your opinion in the comments!
