The testing phase for this massive RP project begins next week. The official update brings new map content and an improved character editor.

Until now, Rockstar Games has been pretty tight-lipped about possible multiplayer features in GTA 6. Instead, the developer is now taking a huge step toward the GTA Online roleplay community. A closed beta for nopixel 5 starts as early as next week, and you’ll at least be able to watch it live.

Over three years ago, Rockstar abruptly acquired the modding team and the technology behind FiveM. Interestingly, the studio had once actually planned to completely shut down this RP platform for GTA Online. Today, the creators are presenting the fruits of this collaboration. Curtain up for Rockstar’s official roleplay server: nopixel 5.

“Rockstar is now fully backing nopixel. This group has long since redefined roleplay through tremendous immersion and clever map customizations,” Rockstar writes in theannouncement blog post. “September 8 marks the start of the closed beta for nopixel 5. A handful of selected players will then be able to jump right into the action via our in-house launcher.”

Watching Instead of Playing: Closed Beta for Selected Creators

Unfortunately, the nopixel 5 closed beta appears to be exclusively for selected content creators and well-known roleplayers from the GTA Online scene. At least you’ll be able to comfortably follow the spectacle next week via various livestreams. Rockstar promises “familiar faces stepping back into the shoes of absolute fan favorites, as well as entirely new characters writing their own stories.”

“GTA Roleplay has essentially transformed Grand Theft Auto 5 into a completely community-driven multiplayer version of Los Santos,” explain the creators. “Participants take on the roles of custom-made characters and weave their personal stories into a vibrant, shared ecosystem.” They continue: “Whether you’re earning a living as law-abiding citizens or chasing the big bucks as outlaws—always in the crosshairs of a real, player-run police force. Every interaction, no matter how small, and every individual connection shapes the character of this city.”

Revamped Editor and Native Launcher: What’s New in nopixel 5

The latest version of nopixel appears to be giving the server’s character editor a major overhaul. The update also introduces new landmarks to explore. On top of that, you can look forward to “polished visuals” and “more responsive passersby.” Another plus: In the future, you’ll be able to launch nopixel 5 conveniently via Rockstar’s own launcher. So once the server opens its doors to the general public, you’ll no longer have to deal with annoying third-party tools.
