The Alters leaves you stranded on an alien planet, but aims to stand out from the genre standard with a unique idea

The Alters was announced in 2022, a survival game that might initially seem like typical genre fare: We are stranded on a hostile planet and have to keep our heads above water with the help of a moving base.

In fact, however, a central game mechanic is based on a completely new idea, and also includes a dose of sci-fi adventure. Now The Alters shows gameplay for the first time, and also reveals the release date

How does The Alters work?

In order to survive, you have to operate a mobile high-tech base in this unusual survival game, which can only be controlled by a specialized crew. As you are always on the run from the deadly solar radiation it is essential that the station keeps moving. However, your goal is to escape the planet at some point

Luckily with the help of a rare substance, you are able to create copies of yourselfbased on having chosen a different path at important moments in your life. For example, you completed your studies, committed to a relationship or moved away from home

Based on these decisions, your variants have certain skills that you need to run the base. However, they are also independent individuals who have certain character traits, desires and ideas. This can also lead to conflicts with you and other variants, as explained in the new trailer above

In terms of gameplay, you can expect a kind of mixture of exploring the planet and managing the base. You will probably have to decide which new variants you create, where you use them and how you react to conflicts. The Alters is due to be released later this year for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

This year is already great for survival fans: two highly acclaimed survival games, Palworld and Enshrouded, were released in the first two months of 2024. In February, the Steam hit Sons of the Forest also made the leap to version 1.0.
