It was one of the most successful and longest-running live-service projects, but now the end of Destiny 2 is approaching. The final update is coming in June 2026.

Destiny 2has had a long run. Since its release, the multiplayer shooter has been regularly expanded with new seasons through its live-service model, bringing new stories, new gear, and new gameplay systems. Now, the era is officially coming to an end.

Developer Bungie revealed this in a blog post. According to the post, the final content update for Destiny 2 will be released on June 9, 2026.The goal is to clear the way for the future.

The Final Update

The final content expansion is calledMonument of Triumph. It is intended to be a kind of love letter to the community and fulfill many wishes as a finale. You can find all the new features announced so far on the officialBungie website. Here are a few highlights:

  • The Director returns
  • A new (permanent) Pantheon with new bosses is coming
  • Destination weapons are being reworked, as is loot from raids and dungeons

What happens after Destiny 2?

We’ve translated Bungie’s official statement for you:

For nearly twelve years, we’ve had the immense pleasure and honor of exploring the Destiny universe alongside you. Through all the ups and downs, surprises, and successes, it has been an incredible privilege to shape Destiny together with our players. While our love for Destiny 2 remains as strong as ever, we realized that after The Final Shape, the time has come to let our shared worlds and Destiny live on beyond Destiny 2.

As our focus now turns to a fresh start for Bungie, we will begin developing our next games. To that end, we will release the final live-service content update for Destiny 2 on June 9, 2026, to begin this new journey as a studio.

Even though active development is coming to an end, we’ll ensure that Destiny 2 remains playable, just as the original Destiny is today. Many changes in this final update are aimed at ensuring that Destiny 2 remains a welcoming place for players to return to.

We are proud of Destiny 2, the places it has taken us, and the legacy it has created. Thanks to all of you, our universe is vast and built on years of shared stories, adventures, and victories. From the Cosmodrome to the Pale Heart to the Lawless Frontier, we have forged lifelong memories and friendships with all of you.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has joined us on this journey.

Is Destiny 3 in the works?Exactly what this fresh start at Bungie means remains very vague. However, well-known industry insider Jason Schreier paints a rather bleak picture of the future. According to him, Bungie is now planning major layoffs among former Destiny 2 developers. Some of them are reportedly working on new ideas, including specific ones for Destiny. None of these have been given the green light yet. A Destiny 3 is therefore currently up in the air.

Does this come as a surprise to you? Will you switch to Marathon after Destiny 2, or will you remain loyal to the old sci-fi shooter, even if no new seasons or other content are released? Feel free to let us know in the comments. We’ll, of course, keep our eyes open to see if the rumors mentioned by Jason Schreier are confirmed.
